When it comes to cell phones I tend to know as much as I care to know

But there's one thing that has gotten me curious. Sometimes I see a weird icon on my cell phone display that looks like a U with an arrow on the left side, pointing up. What could I mean? Does it have something to do with GPS?

UMTS... hmm... seem to be some kind of hi-speed data transfer protocol for cell phones.
