Ashlands Gate? - Vrenir - 03-26-2006

Apparently there is a rumor in Oblivion that Ald'ruhn has been attacked by Daedra. Currently, it has not been decided whether or not our community will be creating gates outside of Cyrodiil, but either way, we need to address this rumor. Is it just hearsay produced by a paranoid public, is it an exaggeration, is it real, and if it is real, what happened and how? These are my thoughts on the matter:

We have already established that the second of the three part Main Quest will concern a new Astronach Cult and possibly the rescue of Vivec from their clutches. Astronachs are somehow connected to the realm of Oblivion, though I do not believe that they are classified as Daedra. That is the background; now for the execution.

The PC arrives in the Ashlands region, possibly at Ald'ruhn and discovers that there has indeed been a Daedra attack of some sort. Flame Astronachs swept through, maybe damaged some things or killed some people before they were stopped. They allegedly came from a gate that appeared outside of town. A young Redoran of some notoriety then bravely entered the gate and found a way to destroy it. This young man is now a hero. (Perhaps this character can even be Venim's son who we have made a major NPC already.) The PC can ask about the incident, but really nobody knows much about the reasons for the attack. It was different from the Cyrodiil ones but the gate is gone and nobody really cares anymore other than that they defeated the invadors single-handedly.

Later on, in the Astronach MQ branch, the PC discovers that the gate was created by the mysterious cult. Perhaps they intend to create another one as well somewhere else and must be stopped. Perhaps there is a permanent gate somewhere hidden on the island? Either way, these gates are different in that they lead to the Astronachs' realm rather than the standard Oblivion plane.

Here's the cliff notes version: The mysterious attack on Ald'ruhn, whatever form that takes, ends up being something that nobody knows much about, simply that they stopped it successfully. Later it is discovered by the PC that though it was similar to the Cyrodiil assaults, it was in fact something completely different tied to the Astronach Cult.

I know that it's a rough idea, but I just wanted to get it out there. Thoughts, especially from KuKulzA and Mr. Redoran?

- KuKulzA - 03-26-2006

I am sure batman would be very interested but it seems he is not on often anymore which cpncerns me greatly :|
I like the idea and maybe when the Atronach Cult become a mini-MQ thing gates will be re-opened etc., and due to the recent events in Morrowind I suggest we redo how the House of Troubles be done.... Atronachs are not looked up upon ion Oblivion, they seem to be the simpler but more ancient Daedra.... the elemental Daedra and have no master other than their own wills...

- Vrenir - 04-09-2006

Bump for Batman.

- Axen - 04-09-2006

Read my "rumors (dug through CS)" thread. There's rumors about Ald'Ruhn being levelled and the Telvanni attempting to close the gates but without success.

One idea would be that Ald'Ruhn is destroyed except for the Skar, where the Redorans are making their last stand, but the door is barricaded. There's a note on the door saying that everyone needs to evacuate to Maar Gan. You go there, talk to a councillor, they give you the task of closing the gate... you go do that, you and the Redorans kill the rest of the Daedra, then you tell the councillor in Maar Gan, the councillors go back to the Skar, and Ald'Ruhn starts to get rebuilt as you do quests.
And if you've completed Oblivion's main quest prior to visiting Ald'Ruhn, you won't have to do any of this, and you'll see that it's beginning to be rebuilt.

- Vrenir - 04-09-2006

My current theory is only a slight modification of my earlier one in this post:

The invasions on Vvardenfell, unbeknownst to the locals were tied to the Astronach Cult and not to the Cyrodiil attacks. (Basically the Cult used the Imperial problems as a smoke-screen for their own activities.) During this, a series of two or three gates opened across the island. Most were in fairly remote regions (the Cult didn't want to play their hand fully, just test the waters). The Telvani sent men to investigate but they were unsuccessful in closing the gates. Then, when the final and largest gate appeared near Ald'ruhn, Venim's son took action, went inside, and shut the gate down. After it was closed, the others across the island also mysteriously shut down (or disappeared whatever way it works). This is another clue to the PC that the situation is not the same as the one he encountered before, but he might not pick up on that. Venim's son, triumphant, is a hero both to the Redorans and to the Telvani, perhaps almost like a new Nereverine in their eyes. The incident sparks greater cooperation between the two Houses. When the PC arrives, he hears about Venim's glorious victory and has to deal with the young Redoran's charisma.

Oh, and we should also have some sort of mention about the skirmish in which Juib died. Perhaps he was fighting at Venim's side or led an initial attack on the first gate to appear in the wilderness.

- Axen - 04-09-2006

You could make cliff racers spawn out of the gates. Now THERE'S an unstoppable force for you.

Also, the Mythic Dawn apparently isn't strictly in Cyrodiil. They wanted to destroy all of Tamriel and rebuild the Ayleid culture.
And please no hero other than the player. I don't want it to end up like Oblivion's main quest where Martin was the hero and you're just his errand boy.

- X23 - 04-09-2006

Sounds good, but a cult opening Oblivion gates sounds like Oblivions main quest, where the mythic dawn were helping with the Oblivion gates.

- Vrenir - 04-09-2006

That they seem on the surface the same is the point. The Mythic Dawn wouldn't be concerned with Morrowind if they're seeking to rebuild the Ayleids, because there are no Ayleid ruins in that part of the continent (it wasn't apparently in their ancient borders). But this different cult sees what's happening in Cyrodiil as an opportunity to do their own thing without attracting attention to themselves. The locals respond, but make the wrong assumption about it, blaming the Cyrodiil issues with the Mythic Dawn. The PC arrives, doesn't have to do anything (no repitition of the TESIV MQ) but if he's smart, he can figure out that something's not adding up about the story. Eventually, we mod the rest of the plotline in (after the House War) and the mystery is solved.

Also, the point of Venim's heroism isn't to make the PC a lacky. It's to give him a rival with similar credentials that he will have to come to blows with at some point. Basically it's putting in an unexpected element where the PC can show up expecting the locals to think that he's hot stuff because he helped save Cyrodiil from destruction, and they can say "So what? Our guy saved us too without your help." The player is reduced to having to earn their respect in spite of his earlier heroism.

- Axen - 04-09-2006

I posted this in another thread:
"After Oblivion's main quest, it's impossible to open a stable portal directly from Tamriel to Mehrunes Dagon's plane of Oblivion. It's still possible to do that for the other planes of Oblivion, though (in Boethiah's quest, he opens a portal to his realm of Oblivion for you to enter (but they made his plane look exactly like Mehrunes Dagon's... laziness? :/)), but there's only one evil cliche lord of doom and destruction."

- Vrenir - 04-09-2006

Nice info, but I fail to see the relevance. We are neither contemplating opening portals to Dagon's plane nor are we contemplating introducing another evil cliche lord of doom (as far as I know). The exact details of the Astronach Cult and how it works haven't been explored yet, but I can pretty well guarentee that we won't copy the Mythic Dawn, the House of Troubles, or House Dagoth. It will be its own entity with its own leadership and its own methodology and its own goals.
