| | Re-installing's never fun, but I find it to be a good opportunity to re-organize my file structures. Entertaining any day of the week Glad to hear you've dealt with the Trojans, sometimes you've just got to slap your computer until it realizes it's place.

| | I also did go against the poll. I'm using Vista 32. I was tired of calling Microsoft for a new code for XP. But Vista is not that bad. Just have to get used to it. | | 29.07.2008 19:48 | | |

| | I use Vista 32 as well, without a problem. All works fine. Make sure you install MW/Oblivion in e.g. C:\Games\Oblivion. If you install the game in the 'program files folder' you'll get a lot of problems because of the new safety features related to this Vista folder.

Actually, its an ok OS as soon as you turn off all the things that either aren't necessary or are unneccessarily restrictive (from my point of view as an IT person). I really don't like that it chews up 726 MB of memory just when idling after start-up straight from MS. In my opinion, its a bit excessive on the memory use, but fine other than that. | | 30.07.2008 04:44

| | quote: | Originally posted by Zurke When XP came out I returned it after they told me I had to call to use something I just bought. I have been using 2000 pro ever since. I can usually find all files I need to install programs dlls etc. My wife has vista on her laptop. So you dont have to activate Windows Vista? I guess when I can no longer use 2000 I will 'upgrade' (if that is a accuarate term). Till then I am using 2 gig of mem and it runs great. | I am afraid I am the bearer of bad news then: you still need to activate Vista, either over the phone or online. The likely difference with her laptop is that it was probably activated before she received it. If you go to the store and buy a disk to install it, it needs to be activated same as XP. Nowadays, computer manufacturers usually activate them when they load the OS. The whole idea of course was to cut down on the pirated versions of windows out there. I can't really blame them for it since people are stealing the OS, but it is annoying when issues come up and you have to call them up in order to reactivate on a properly licensed copy because of computer upgrades (i.e. motherboard & CPU changed when upgrading computer). @ Buster - Thats why the first thing I did with my Vista machine was to turn off all the bells and whistles that I didn't need. That and to turn off that stupid "Are you sure you want to do that.....are you really sure????" software. Even my XP is set up as classic with minimal fluff. | | 30.07.2008 08:21 | | |

It's a stretch even in that forum, but as more of us are boxed into Vista, it'd sure be helpful. Thanks, Steve | | 30.07.2008 14:40

I think bundled OS don't need activation because you can't use them on other PCs.
While I feel for any person/company wanting to preserve profits I
cannot sympathize with a company that frosts over greed with protection
and impedes a users use of a product that person should own. There are
obvious pirates selling the product.
Who knows maybe fedora core or another GPL will find ways to run the
programs designed for windows. I see a need for a US Supreme Court
decision
. |
They may not need to be activated initially when you get them bundled,
but you do have to go through the same activation procedure if enough
changes on the PC. Windows creates a hash from certain components in
the computer and if the change in that value is big enough, and it
pretty much always happens in regards to changing motherboards, windows
goes into product activation mode.
As for the U.S. Supreme Court, I think they need to make a number of decisions.
But I won't get into the MS situation as it helps pay my rent.
Though it would be cool to see more options out there that were user friendly enough for the average consumer.
@ SACarrow: I will see what I can do about coming up with some tips and
tricks for Vista. Its going to be on most people's computers
eventually. I need to do a refresher course though because my PC that
had Vista got sold to one of my friends when his died. |

Thanks for all the info.
My copy is legit. I'm still installing apps and games but have to work sometimes.
I did get a little present yesterday, my car which my brother no longer needs.
