Having a little trouble accessing the site |
|
I don't understand it, but my home computer won't grant me access to
Silgrad but the office one does. It's probably a virus which will mean
a complete wipe of the HD's. So to have a little fun while I'm backing
up the files which operating system should I restart it with

Best of luck in these endeavors,
I am backing up everything !!!
The 64 bit will give you better performance, but you might be limited to the programs you can load
I do not know which programs will not work with the 64bit

Found the source of the problem. It's a trojan and it will not erase or
get cleaned by my anti-virus software. Luckily, my DVD backup software
is on another drive so I can get all my things to safety but it's going
to take awhile. I've got a lot to backup.

The trojan is getting worse. There is still so much more to backup but
I'm thinking of giving up and lose the info. I can't even access the
net anymore from that machine (I'm at my office right now if you are
wondering). I'm going to try to save a few more things and wipe the
HD's out. Especially all the Oblivion and Morrowind files have to be
saved.

There's several good anti-trojan programs out there you could try if
your virus program won't catch it, like AdAware for instance. Other
than that, if you know the name of the trojan you could run a search
for it through google and might find forum threads where the problem is
discussed and solved. I did that when I was infected by an annoying
adware program that kept hijacking firefox and found a fix for it on a
forum.

What anti-virus do you have? I've been using AVG antivirus for years,
and it's saved my computer from my incredibly stupid internet usage (or
alternately my talent for picking up viruses). You can download AVG here also, it's free.
Have you tried a system restore? I assume you're using windows XP, and
if so, you can use the System Restore tool to "reset" your computer to
an earlier point. Your computer automatically sets restore points that
you can go back to in the event that something exactly like this has
occurred. System Restore is the first thing I try when AVG isn't enough
to fix whatever latest virus i've caught More info on System Restore here.
And lastly, what internet browser do you use? It won't help you now,
but in the future, i'd recommend Mozilla Firefox with the NoScript
add-on installed, if that's not what you're already using. I haven't
gotten a virus or trojan since installing it, and it additionally
blocks pop-ups and ads. Firefox can be found here, while more information about the Noscript add-on is available here.
Hope some tidbit of info here can help! I have when I have to wipe my
disks clean and re-install everything, especially when there are still
options to fix the problem.

I've been using Ad-Aware, some spyware programs, my own McAfee and I
have to thank you Razor. You gave me some advice that was well worth a
try. But I was only able to destroy four out of the five trojans. The
fifth reproduced itself afterwards. Still, I've been able to backup
more files and hopefully by the weekend I can do a complete HD's wipe
(5 HD's to take out). Next time I will have to protect the machine
better. Maybe some Oblivion gates with Golden Saints to wipe the
malware out.
