A History of the Thrassian Plague ? By Ja-Kha?jay

By Sven Storm-Singer

The Thrassian plague is a disease which killed almost half the inhabitants of Tamriel near the end if the 1st Era. Its early symptoms included itchy skin followed by a rash, as well as a runny nose, bleeding from various bodily orifices and blood flecked vomit. Death followed within days. All citizens of Tamriel were impacted by this deadly disease.

The first known case of the Thrassian plague was reported in Stros M?kai in the year 1E1998, but is was passed off as a sporadic illness by the local healers. It was eventually learned that the Sload of Thras were responsible for the plague, and more and more cases appeared which lead to the closure of the Stros M?kai port, and an embargo was placed in 1E2202 to stop the spread of the disease. It failed.

The Thrassian plague was reported on mainland Tamriel shortly after the Stros? M?kai embargo was placed. Ironically, smugglers were the ones who transmitted the disease to the mainland, before dying themselves. When almost a quarter of the population of Anvil perished, the Colovian King of Anvil, Bendu Olo, sailed with the All Flags fleet to Thras, slaughtering as many Sload as could be found and somehow sinking the majority of Thras beneath the waves.

This retribution failed to stop the plague and by the time the fleet returned in 1E2209, the plague was ravaging the Colovian territories, most of High Rock, Western Skyrim and north-eastern Valenwood. In the year 1E2215 it had spread throughout Valenwood and the provinces of Summerset Isles and Elsweyr closed their borders in an effort to stop the plague.

By 1E2234 the population of Tamriel had taken a terrible blow. Morrowind, Cyrodiil and Skyrim were ravaged, while Valenwood, Hammerfell and High Rock are recovering slightly after the decimation of it?s citizenry. The land that eventually became the Black Marsh came out relatively unscathed, due the Argonians natural disease resistance; they did take some losses though.

In 1E2339 the Thrassian plague crossed the closed borders of the Summerset Isles and in the following years the population dropped dramatically. In the year 1E2259 the Thrassian plague breached the border of the Elsweyr Confederacy and almost entirely wiped out the entire Khajiiti race by the end of 1E2260. Out of 16 clans that lived in Elsweyr to that day, only two remained after the plague.

Gradually the number of cases of the Thrassian plague declined, and the plague was almost unheard of. Still it took more than seventy years before Tamriel recovered from the effects of the plague. In recent years there has been increasing numbers of sightings of Sload around various parts of Tamriel, typically around Tear, Morrowind, and Senchal, Elsweyr. Let all citizens of Tamriel hope that the disaster of the Thrassian plague does not repeat itself.
