The Seige of Orsinium, a play - Lugar2

ACT III, SCENE I

NARRATOR: Late night, the MidYear Festival. Six Maidens of the sword meet at their local hall to tell their latest stories of adventure on their day of prayer and fasting and honour to the Way of the Sword.

A knocking rings on the door and it is opened, in stumbles a soldier.

MAKELA LEKI: Healers! Quick! Good man, who are you? Speak.

WOUNDED SOLDIER: My lady, I am a guardian the Bankorai Pass in the Wrothgarian Mountains. There has been a foul treachery, (cough).

MAKELA LEKI: What is it? What was this treachery?

WOUNDED SOLDIER: An invasion (cough) sponsored by the Crystal Tower of High Rock... an invasion led by King Joile of Daggerfall, the King has turned on Hammerfell amidst our alliance.

PATIA (Using a crystal of healing): Here, this should help with your injuries. Now please continue.

WOUNDED SOLDIER: I thank you my lady. Haste must be taken. If they take the pass, Hammerfell will be theirs.

ZELL: There isn't time for forces to arrive. All are either gone to Orsinium or a weeks march from here.

WOUNDED SOLDIER: Then surely we will perish.

MAKELA LEKI: No. We shall go, we six Maidens of the sword. They shall not take the pass. Go to the king and tell him what you have us, for we must depart. (Exit the six Maidens)

SOLDIER: Gods be with them.

ACT III, SCENE II

NARRATOR: The battle still rages against the Orcs with little ground being won on either side. The Daggerfall forces begin to lose heart with their King gone from the battlefield.

The scene opens at the tent of the Order of Diagna.

KOTARO: A hopefully decisive engagement being set into motion sir.

GAIDEN SHINJI: Good, I shall be leading the charge myself. I want this war over, its taken enough of our resources. Azuk's head shall be mine.

KOTARO: You must surely be an avatar of the HoonDing; you are Diagna in the flesh.

GAIDEN SHINJI: If the gods choose to favour me, so be it, I accept it with honour. May we pray to the Unknown gods of war in these hours.

SASON: Indeed. We'll need them if we're ever to prevail.

GAIDEN SHINJI: It will be a straight shot at the leadership. The mages will get us in. Take out officers, take out shamans, and take out Azuk, which is our goal.

ALUSARON: And if it should fail.

GAIDEN SHINJI: It won't. After all, the best techniques are passed on by the survivors, and we have survived so much. We must survive yet again, so that the future will know of our prowess.

(Note from the playwright: Though it is a well known quote by our time, no emphasis should be placed on the line "the best techniques are passed on by the survivors" as it is the original context.)

ALUSARON (With a smile): But of course.

ACT III, SCENE III

NARRATOR: The Maidens of the sword rush to the Bankorai Pass in the Wrothgarian Mountains, arriving just as the last three guardians are overwhelmed by the horde that is King Joile's army. They enter the pass forming a battle line, six abreast.

The scene opens at the Bankorai Pass. The magical armor and swords of the Maidens shines in the light of the torches as they stand, prepared to fight to the end.

MAKELA LEKI: Be gone fowl traitors! Or you shall face the wraith of the sword Maidens.

SOLDIER: Do not waste your lives little ladies. Leave from our path, for you are outnumbered over two hundred to one. Join our ranks and you can even become nice wives.

MAKELA LEKI: You'll regret having dishonoured our lands. Attack us if you dare.

SWORD MAIDENS (in unison): For The Song of the Sword!

NARRATOR (The actors following the narration): The fighting begins, many of the enemy fall before the blades of the Maidens, their line unfaltering. Maiden Julia is the first to fall, a poisoned dagger finding a rent in her armor. Maiden Kati follows shortly after.

MAKELA LEKI: Hold the line!

NARRATOR: The Maidens continue their fighting. The Maiden Zell falls next and with her the line is broken. The three remaining Maidens form circle to defend themselves. From the air and arrow finds its mark in Cegila, and only two stand. Soon there is only one, Patia is fallen.

MAKELA LEKI (to herself as she fights off the enemy): I must find strength. I must not let them defeat me. The line is gone, they will crush me. But the book, Frandar Hunding's Book of Circles, the Way of Strategy... the Shehai, can I do it? I must do it... I.. Did It!!! (The Maidens pulls forth a blazing blade to represent the Shehai.)

NARRATOR: Rising with newfound energy and vigour, the final Maiden sweeps down upon the enemy, their armours and weapons severing like grass before her blade as well as their bones. She charges for the leader.

MAKELA LEKI: Your time has come fowl traitor!

KING JOILE: Your time has past. Depart with your ancestors, I am the future!

MAKELA LEKI: Then the future is dead.

The guards of the King fall before the Shehai. With one stroke the magical armor of the King is sundered, with the next his head.

(Note from the playwright: For best effect an Illusionist should be present for the effect of the King being beheaded.)

NARRATOR: With the King dead his armies flee before the Maiden. Her own wounds have cost her dearly, and she lay dying. She pulls out a small round globe, a memory stone with which to record her story.

MAKELA LEKI: I am ... a simple warrior ... I grew up as a, a Maiden of the Spirit Blade ... As early ... as early as I can ... remember ...

Lights fade on the pass.

ACT III, SCENE IV

NARRATOR: Morning, Orsinium.

The scene opens in the command tent of the Order of Diagna.

KOTARO: What the scouts report is unmistakable. King Joile betrayed us, and now is dead.

ALUSARON: The day is sad. Do the Daggerfall forces here know?

KOTARO: I believe not. We only just received word ourselves. Commander Rane has been called.

Enter Thetrard Rane.

THETRARD RANE: You requested my audience?

GAIDEN SHINJI: Yes. What do you know of your King's latest actions? Why did he leave the battlefield some time ago.

THETRARD RANE: He told me not, save that he had business to attend to.

SASON: Liar! You're in on his plot, aren't...

GAIDEN SHINJI: Please, let him talk.

THETRARD RANE: I know not of what you speak. What is this about?

GAIDEN SHINJI: Your King is dead. Killed at the Bankorai Pass attempting invasion of Hammerfell.

THETRARD RANE: What? Impossible, he would never...

GAIDEN SHINJI: We believe those at Crystal Tower were responsible for putting him up to it. Tell your men of their loss so that they may mourn before the next battle.

THETRARD RANE: Yes, of course. But... I still can't believe, though if you insist. (Exit Thetrard Rane)

GAIDEN SHINJI: The alliance is faltering; we must act quickly to defeat the enemy before it shatters completely.

SASON: Yes, let us put your plan into action.

GAIDEN SHINJI: Tomorrow morning. Tomorrow morning we shall strike.
