does anyone have:
  • TES3 Morrowind, Tribunal, Bloodmoon on PC
  • access to the TES3 Morrowind (& expansion) CS
  • 3ds max 4 (or any compatible version)


if you do have those, you may be of great help. If you could get the 3d model file of some fo the objects and creatures and stuff from Morrowind easily and convert them into the 3ds max, that would really help modelers.

thsi is not a request but just to see who can, once I talk with Razorwing about what he can get out, I'll see what we need to get out to analyze.... and also, I feel that it would be helpful to have something to base it on besides 2d art


so who would be able to do that?

Kukluza, i'm an okay modeler, and in the next few weeks i'm going to be putting together a new system based on this one, to be my "Oblivion Computer" and I was planning on downloading Max 8 and using razorwings help ful hints( Wink ) and doing some of the modeling myself...

but perhaps you and I should stick to easier, simpler things such as plants and whatnot... however I really wanted to hold off on the full effort until release day, so that we have the CS right there and we can learn everything!

hmm... that is one aspect of our team that is not so great... 3d modeling....

I promise you guys that by September, I will finish the muckspunge and be decent at simply models....

Well, I have a PC with Morrowind GOTY w/ the CS, but I don't have 3D Studio Max, and it's a little too expensive for me to get right now, just to use to make mod's for a game.

I could go out and get MilkShape, which is only around $25 last time I remember, but I would need someone to convert those files into *.3ds files to work with Oblivion.

Plus all the other stuff I have going on, as well as I'm not a very good modeller in the end, it would be awhile before I could get around to it. Sorry. I dunno

I don't think I quite understand what your talking about.

What I meant was that models made in MilkShape are not usable in in Morrowind, and have been confirmed to be not usable in Oblivion. To make them usable (I think this is how it works), one would have to open the model from MilkShape in 3D Studio Max and save it as a *.3ds file. Then it can be made to work in the CS for Morrowind (as well as Oblivion).

I was saying that I could go out and get MilkShape, because it is very much cheaper than 3DS Max, and then I could give those models I make to someone else, and have them convert them into usable models for the mods.

A lot of work, but if we are short on modellers, then I could give it a try. But don't expect much right now in the form of models or any kind's of textures, cause I really suck at both at the moment. Bash

well, can't you directly take out the 3d model files from CS, give them to me, and I'll do it?
or is that not possible? cause I never took out 3d models myself so I don't know for sure

There's a way you can extract one of the datafiles from your Morrowind folder... You do however need some sort of program, don't remember the name though.

I bet someone over at the Official Forums know this.

All you have to do is go to the data files folder and copy and paste, but if you want it usable with 3ds you need the converter. Go to elderscrolls.com for that

I don't know if it helps, but...

In some installs of Morrowind the NIFs, textures and other assets are in .bsa archives. To extract them you have to use a program called "BSA Browser" which is in our database. In other installs the NIFs and textures and other assets are already extracted and found in the Data Files folder.

Then you should try to get hold of 3D Studio Max 3, 4 or 5.

Then "install" the unofficial NIF importer, i.e., drop the NIFPLUGIN.DLI file in Max's plugin dir.

And then you're all set for importing .nif meshes and exporting them as .3ds. Converting a mesh only takes a couple of seconds once it's set up.

The only problem is that you can't buy anything lower than 3ds Max 8 from anywhere I can find (I believe it is illegal to sell older versions). SO do you know hwere I can get a hold of version 5, since that is what Beth is using, and therefore the version that will need to be used to make models for Oblivion?

perhaps there is a converter that turns 3ds max to gmax?
if so, just get that, and the free downloaded gmax... like 3ds max but free and harder to use :D

Ixidors Bane: It's true that's the version Bethesda used but it'd be silly if they didn't release an exporter that works with the current version of Max as well.

What was the current version of Max when Morrowind was made? Did they make an export for that version, because I think I remember that you could only use up to version 4 back then? Confused
