Alright, I learned the bare basics of max, but right now I am concerned with making my old moddel ready for use in oblivion. for starters, after making a UVW map material, whatdo I do to actualy make the UV map.
To add a basic map to a 3d object;

select your mesh
go to the modifier panel
click the modifier list
scroll down to uvw map and click it
in the parameters, select box
adjust the length, width and height so they're all the same, all the highest of the three
open the material editor
left-click-and drag-drop a material on your model

(experiment with using other types than box maps depending on what kind of mesh you want to map)
