Tanuki - Kielanai - 03-16-2007 Tanuki looks like a racoon dog, but it's a different species from "racoon", so it's really just ... "tanuki". It has always been considered to be a mischievous shape-changer in folklore, and has an unusually large scrotum, considering it's a small animal. Biologists say this is a necessary evolution feature for this animal, but mostly it leads to a lot of paintings and pottery exaggerating it way out of proportion. So, it's the joke thing when it comes to tanuki. If you ever see the statues or old paintings, those things at the base are not round little legs, and that sack he's carrying is not a sack. Here are some other articles that may help, and some pictures. Tanuki 1 Tanuki 2 I will try to retell a tanuki tale for one of the book donations to the project. ^_^ - Ysne - 03-16-2007 Thank you for that information. I love learning new stuff. Tanuki are cute. - Kielanai - 03-17-2007 The real ones, at least. Drawings and pottery can get strange. Hehe. But they are kind of like small, fat, fluffy fox. We have tanuki crossing signs all over the roads here because we're surrounded by forest, but I have never seen one cross a road. ... Or maybe I did and he was in disguise ... hmmmmm. Update - Kielanai - 04-01-2007 Actually this is more of a post to let you know I'm still alive. Heh. I've been so busy lately. I took on too many things in my free time this winter and now it's catching up to me. I am about ready to start on the clan uniforms, but I think I know what my first book donation will be, and I may try to throw that in, too. I referenced a vampire cat folk tale in my story, and it occured to me that might be a good one to start with for some book collection. So, I will try to retell that. It's called "Vampire Cat of Nabeshima". If you do a search, I'm sure something will come up for it, if you'd like to read it before I make the game book. When I come across real Japanese places in tales like this, should I substitute names of Akavir places, or keep the original Japanese? (Of course it would help if I knew Akavir places.) I know places like Toukyou and Kyoutou would be out because they are too well known. Also what about demons? Does Akavir have named demons I should substitute, or use original Japanese names? And I realized I forgot the mochi stuff again! I really need to clean out my files more often ... Stuff to work on this week. - Ysne - 04-01-2007 We can make up town names. I'm not sure how many names we have at the moment. Kodama might have a list. I'm glad you are still around. No hurry on this, Kodama doesn't even have a new computer yet, and I'm still trying to work with vista/xp on the other lap top. This one is just barely good enough to run oblivion. Can't do much else with it. Cat vampire story might fit in with new lore on undead in the tiger-dragon lands. I'll look forward to reading it when its ready. - Kodama - 04-02-2007 Yeah i have some names... i think  Let's see, we have the city of knifeblossom in the Knifeblossom region, east of Knifeblossom is a village in the middle of a river, it's main production is iron, so it's name is Tatara Ba. North of that village, used to be a town, but i have not come up with a name for it yet. North of Knifeblossom is a monastery/temple, no name yet. In Tsaesci there are some places from the official lore, there was a small village at the coast, the Imperial forces renamed it "Septimia" but now it's a city, the Tsaesci must have used the original name after they defeated the Imperials. So i have to come up with a name for the place, the city is a lot like Osaka, so i think i will call it Nagasaka East of "Septimia" is another city, it was renamed "Ionith" by the Imperials, i have to come up with a good name for it, it's on a mountain side. That's it for now, there are other places in Akavir, but most of them are not based on Japanese culture. Kielanai, if you can come up with a good name for for a place, let me know. Nagasaka ... LoL! - Kielanai - 04-02-2007 Sounds like a fine twin city for Osaka. Do you know what they mean? The kanji "Oo" means "big". Kanji "saka" means "slope/hill". "Naga" means "long". So, your new city means "Long Slope". Sounds like a good place to do grass sledding! Do the people there act like Osaka? LoL! They are known for being very, um, ... colorful. Once on the news, a policeman was ticketing trucks that park on the side of the road under new laws to forbid that (because they cause traffic jams and accidents, but everyone in Japan parks on the street like that, particularly delivery trucks). The driver fussed at him for giving him the ticket. When the angry man left, the camera focused on the policeman and he said something like, "This is Osaka. People are expressive here." And he laughed. ^_^ Anyway, I'll run the name of choice past you before I finalize it in the book, and if I come up with any names, I'll let you know. Undead tiger dragons???!!! Yikes! That would be an interesting twist on the draco lich. Edit: Here is the first of the other clan uniforms I have started. You said 7 Tsaesci and 3-4 for human. Is that still correct? I am labeling these by the mon used, rather than by race, so you can place them where appropriate. So, Knifeblossom is the only one that will have the kanji name. I will try to change mon, color, and placement to give a little variety, but I will try to keep these antique looking. - Kodama - 04-03-2007 I like the wheel shaped mon, it fits the black kamishimo nicely :goodjob: I think we will need four uniforms for the humans (the uniform for Knifeblossom included). There are seven Tsaesci lords, so we will need seven uniforms and mon for them. Nagasaka is the perfect name for the city, part of it is on a slope, it's in a valley with a very long hill on the south side, it has a long slope. There was a group of Taiko drummers in town last week (Yamato, the drummers of Japan), i have seen them perform, it was awesome! :applause: :applause: :applause: They were drumming for a couple of hours :pop: afterwards i bought a dvd so i can watch the show whenever i want The biggest drum was HUGE!!! I wish i had a drum like that, the neighbours would love it Cool! - Kielanai - 04-03-2007 That big drum is a daiko. All of them are huge, but some are especially bigger than others. And concerts do usually run about 2 hours. Even our practice runs 2 hours. The hands get blisters and hard places because of that, but if a week or two is missed, the blisters start all over again. :| If you want to really annoy the neighbors without paying the price, buy a plastic trash can or tub. (needs to be really big like taiko) And cover the top with a whole role of packaging tape or other kind of tough plastic tape. It's called "gomitaiko" (trash taiko ). My sensei hates that name. "Don't call it that!" :lmao: But it's good for practicing and only about 2000 yen compared to VERY expensive drums. I'm saving up to buy a really nice drum, so I can pack gomitaiko in the closet. (Poor neighbors.) I drum on chairs and sofa and even tree trunks, though. I need my own taiko ... -_-* Will continue working on the uniforms, then. ^_^ - Kodama - 04-03-2007 Gomitaiko... i like that name  For one of the human mon, i would like to see the mon on the black screen on the picture below. It's the mon of the Ichimonji clan in the movie "Ran", i would like to see it on a black uniform. |
