(City Council » Other Quests) The Idea Factory: Minor Quests |
|
Folks, High Rock is a big place. The main quest is in development, but
there is plenty of room for smaller quests as well. Oblivion and
Mororowind both had all sorts of side quests to spice up the game and
keep things interesting. That requires a fair bit of creativity to
accomplish.
I'd like to propose we use this thread for smaller, supporting quest
ideas. As human beings, our greatest gift is our ability to learn from
each other - to share ideas and information. That's what I'd like to do
here, a sort of melting pot of creativity, open to everyone who wants
to look in, read and contribute.
I have a couple of ideas to get things rolling...
1. A temple of Kynareth (could be in one of the towns or
alternately in a pastoral village ort settlement) needs a religious
artifact recovered. The artifact was lost in the tumult of the Warp and
clues as to it's location have only recently surfaced.
(Success gives the PC fame.)
2. One of the surviving High Rock witch covens has discovered a
rune stone with odd powers and would like it investigated. It might be
a gate to other planes, it might be a summoning location and it might
also be a marker for an now deceased or diminsihed rival coven's
location. They need someone to got there and find out.
(Success could give the PC fame or infamy, depending on the nature of the coven.)
3. A druidic circle located in a wilderness area is trying to
re-establish itself. They have noticed that since the Warp, portions of
the surrounding wilderness are magically unstable. Nirn is out of
balance and they want to correct this. The PC must investigate several
locations to identify the source of the problem. This will mean working
with (and protecting) a whimsical spriggan agent of circle. In the
process, the PC has the chance to use speechcraft to recruit in a new
follower for the circle, as well as whatever task is required to get
the area back into balance.
(Success would give the PC fame.)
I have other ideas cooking on the back burners of my brain, but these
three will get the ball rolling. These ideas are open to anyone who
wants to play with and/or eventually develop one or more of them. I'll
post others as they form and some I'll likely develop myself.
So, who else has some great quest ideas?

Lol.
Didn't do it for that reason. It's just I have so many ideas from over
the years that they keep banging up against the back of my eyeballs,
screaming to get out.

Braggi you must like High Rock or something
I got a few ideas
maybe... a local village and a goblin warband have been skirmishing for awhile...
the villagers are going to gather for the last push to whipe out the
goblins, but in doing so they will be going into Orsinium territory
(border)... which the goblins are camped in....
so as the player you must settle this as neither of the hamlets were supposed to be attacking each other....
so either you can side with goblins and get some big bad trolls and
ogres to bring along and whipe out the farmer/militia or side with the
farmers and wipe out the small warband... either way... no big reward,
but a stupid conflict
and how about an Orcish trader is trying to import more Durzogs since
the Durzogs were na invader species long ago from the Black marsh but
has been brought to Summerset and High Rock by Altmer for their
goblin-slave armies. A local disease is killing the durzogs for some
reason and he wants to import and stronger breed from Summerset.
However the goblin slave-armies are owned by Barons and Kings so
smuggling them in is tough... help him smuggle them in and lead them to
a small farm deep in the woods and you geta large reward
a Breton woman in Wayrest has fallen in love with an Orc that her
brother is friends with. The Orc hasn't much interest in her, and her
brother is oblivious. The brother and the orc are both armorers and
made their partnership by trading and making armors for arena fighters.
So the lady wants to marry the orc but the orc doesn't want to.
Eventually the brother finds out and tries to kill his friend thinking
the orc was trying to rape his sister. The orc denies this and the
sister runs in between. the Orc sys he must leave this and goes to
orsinium. The lady will later secretly ask you to deliver a letter to
the orc. you can chose to tell the brother about this or not, if you do
he will tell you to also send another letter to the orc explaining the
situation. If you do, sis will be angry but you will get a discount at
their store and raised disposition. If you just send tot he letters you
will get gold from the sister, but she'll be eventually but kindly
rejected by the orc. |

Wow. Those are great ideas! Very detailed and using the OB engine
mechanics as well. I'm still learning what the new engine and CS can
do, so I'm pretty conservative in my quest descriptions so far.
And yes, I do love High Rock. When I first played Arena in the 90's and
read the various area descriptions, HR seemed to fit like a glove.
(Pretty much all my PC's are Breton.) Heck, I'd live there if I could.
(Grin.) Later games' lore just added to the enjoyment for me.
Seriously, I'm not sure exactly why this particular province has always
pulled me, but it does. Something about the terrain and the cultural
"flavor", if you understand me.
And now, I should get the heck back on topic.

Here is some a lot of orcs there but I love orcs
The local lord of this portion of High Rock has found bandits or other
guards and knights of another Lords on his land attacking small
isolated farms and villages. Lead a small retinue of knights and guards
and wipe them out before a full scale war gets out of control.
A local Khajjit Druglord is trying to start a skooma business. He wants
to import skooma and export other goods and return. You can help him
and his goons find a place to settle in or go to the Authorities and
report him and get his goons thrown into jail while he is beheaded
infront of the City/port.
A Lord's son has gone missing some say a local warlord has taken him to
try to gain a foothold in this part of the Land. Either help the
warlord by trading the son for a handsome amount of gold or kill the
warlord and bring him back to the lord for the same amount now think
you can say gain an ally with a warlord who isn't afraid to start
conflicts or gain an ally with a Lord who wont start conflict right
away since there are a lot of alliances in High Rock.

Here's another idea, simpler in scope and not requiring faction involvement.
In OB, you can find various cryptic notes scattered around, giving
treasure hunting directions to small rewards. Two that come to mind
readily are located in hard to reach places in ruined forts. The first
has a cache of potions that enhance your acrobatics skill with a note
and the second has a sword pointing in the direction of an isolated
chest in the wilderness, along with a note giving directions as well.
The chest doesn't hold much - just a steel dagger, but there is a note
with it congratulating you for exploring and going off the beaten path.
I imagine there must be plenty more, but I haven't fired up the CS to
locate them. It's more fun to stumble across things like this as you
come to them.
I personally like this idea and think it could be a great way to add
depth. Smaller quests within quests, set pieces that add something but
don't have any major consequences if you don't follow up or succeed in
solving them.
Some ideas based on this:
- a unique piece of non-magical armor is the goal of the hunt. The item
is a variation on a normal armor type (iron, steel, chain, leather
etc.), but is different in design and appearance.
- the directions could point you towards a minor NPC who needs a simple task completed or who has a unique spell for sale.
- the notes could point out a portal or entrance to a small dungeon,
normally quite hard to locate, or perhaps even impossible to find and
enter unless you have the key accompanying the note.
- you might find directions to an isloated area which contains
alchemical ingredients. The spot was once a druidic holy site and the
plants have been sheltered and are thriving since it was abandoned or
lost.
- you could be directed to an abandoned smithy in one of the ruined
towns lost during the Warp. The smithy does not contain anything
powerful in terms of weapons or armor, but it does have some raw metals
avaialbe (silver gold or steel nuggets), along with a cache or
armorer's hammers. The forge (once repaired) might even be usable to
create one (and only one) set of armor or a single weapon of
non-magical type.
- in the same vein, you might be directed to an NPC who has information
about a rare cache of books in a village or chapel ruin, unique stuff
that the modder could write. None of the books are magical, but they
make interesting reading.
More to come...

He certainly wouldn't be bad on the core.
I was just saying that the quest ideas alone shouldn't be what secure it.

Actually, I am in total agreement that ideas alone are not enough to
qualify a person for a position, be it in a hobbyist group, politics or
whatever. Results count. They are not the only criteria, but they sure
do matter!
Add in the fact that I have been a member here on the board for, what,
3 days or so? Nope - its too soon and I respect anyone who thinks that
way. A little caution and common sense will go a long way towards
making this mod a reality. So, as I mentioned in a different thread,
patience is my watchword now.
And hey, this is High Rock!
That right there is more then enough for me. I'm happy just to have
some creative input at whatever level allowed. How many people can say
they got a chance to build a portion of a place they always wanted to
exist, even if it is simply for a computer game? Not many. I'd like to
be one of them, so I'll just keep right on contributing.
Thanks very much for the support gang. But the simple truth is, I'm in
for the long haul. It just needs to be proven with time and results. If
the core wants me, great! If they are full up, no sweat! So long as I
get to run Dran through a fully realized version of his home province
some time in the future, near or distant, I'm a happy guy.

Now, getting back on topic...
Since the idea is to have this thread as an "idea bank", I thought I'd throw in a few more items kicking around in my cranium.
Homage Dungeons
- In one of the other threads, I mentioned Direnni Tower. That (if not
already touched on by any of the larger factions or the main quest)
could be the basis for a couple of great dungeon-crawl style
adventures. You could easily adapt the floor plan of the old DF dungeon
by retaining the original concept but simplfying. DF dungeons were
overly complex and they would give a modder nightmares trying to
reporoduce, if it even could be done. However, if the tower has fallen
into ruin (one possibility) that would simplify things. Even if still
whole and sound, the principle would still apply.
- A homage dungeon to Privateer's Hold might be fun. This was done (and
done well) for MW. Then again, it might also be a case of re-inventing
the wheel. However, if (and only if) the modder in question were
willing, the dungeon could be updated to the OB engine. Alternately, it
could be redone from scratch too. Or simply scrapped as lost
intervening years since the Warp.
Water based and underwater adventures.
There's quite a few possibilities here. High Rock has more coast line
then pretty much any other province, excluding Morrowind and Summerset.
It would be a shame not to exploit some of this.
- One thing I'd like to see is a battle between two ships. The
adventure premise could be piracy, acting as a guard on an outward
bound merchantman or patroling for the HR coastal authorities. The
mechanics would be similar to to the Bloated Float adventure. You start
out in port and then end up at the battle site, already alongside the
enemy ship. The battle would consist of a boarding action, with victory
achived when the opponent's bridge is captured. then, after you reboard
her, your ship returns to port and her previous berth or ties up at a
new port in another place.
- For those who have access to water breathing, I can think of about a
bazillion different variations on underwater dungeons. The main thing
here would be adding in a few new, water-based monsters, since Oblivion
was a bit lean on those compared to MW. Sea plants and similar would
also have to be added in to make the environement less bare.
Arctic Ideas
- HR shares a border with Skyrim and thus has some similar terrain to
consider. This would be a great place for yetis (retextured troll,
anyone?) polar bears, ice wolves (with breath weapon, if possible)
frost daedra, and even minor clashes with neighboring Nord settlements.
- another possibility is chasing down a rogue group of "gentleman
traders" (smugglers) who have taken over a series of ice caves at high
elevation for their personal base/fortress. They have a group of
mercenary bodygaurds (including mages) who can aither be slain or
convinced to defect via bribery, speechcraft or what-have-you.
OK, I think I'm actually tapped out for today.
I'll need a bit of time to let the creative batteries recharge, but
hopefully this is a good start and will be useful to others down the
road. I'll keep adding more, as the ideas strike me...

maybe a grand mini-questline for a Direnni clansmen....
he wants to know what happened to the Iliac Dreugh civilization...
and so you swim south of Balfiera and underwater is a ruinec ity of
glass and coral and Dreugh are there but not as a civilization, only
taking shelter in the ruins of their ancestor's legacy.... and maybe
you do quests for this old Dreugh who will not attack you and he will
tell you that he is the last of the long line of Tyrant kings and that
he will tell you all if you do things for him... but will mention the
Lamia tell a different story...
so you do quests for him, small stuff and big stuff and he tells you
that the Aedroths tried to massacre the Dreugh long ago to make room
for the Mer and the Iliac Dreugh were forced into submission
but asking a Lamia will tel you a very different story... that the
Dreugh society had too much power and their kings misused their power,
took Lamia as concubines, slaved their people, massacred Aldmer, and
thus were toppled by Dreugh rebellion and Lamia uprsising, and Aldmer
insvasion
and when you go back to the Direnni guy he will reward you with a room
in the tower and a large sum of gold. For telling the Dreugh tale he
will give you a water-breathing ring incase he asks you to visit them
again... as for Lamia he gives you a dispel ring so that their powerful
magics won't hurt you if they get pissed..
it's a bit of an odd idea but I don't think it is out of the ordinary for the Direnni

That Dreugh idea has a lot of promise, methinks. MW expanded on them a bit, but not enough for my taste.
I love the idea of exploring underwater ruins...
Heck, you could hetrodyne with other modders here at Silgrad for that
one too... maybe get a group of these ruins, say one or two to each
province's coastline. Some big, some small, depending on how much folks
wanted to add to the idea.

Here is a new idea that sprang up, seeing as hopw the various factions
are starting to be discussed and planned in the forums now.
1. One shot quest - The player has to find someone who has been
killing merchant agents in a remote area. The killer could be a
disgruntled ex-member of the traders federation, a rival group form
within or withou the province or a monster, such as a smarter then
average frost wolf (as an example only) that is killing those in it's
territory after it's mate was slain for her hide. The player deals with
the killer (brings them to justice, removes the threat in whatever way
appropriate) and recieves an increase in disposition with the faction,
allowing slightly better bargains with merchants in the group. This
could be a speechcraft bonus, or something similar. The reward could
also simply be gold, rare/unique alchemic ingredients or a themed
weapon/armor piece with minor magical abilities.
More to come...

Would feel too forced. There's not a way to gracefully slip it in...
Which is why we (and most other BC projects) decided it'd probably be
best to leave it out. I think the League of Rogues will provide an
interesting option for stealth characters.
And our more violent Thieves' Guild.

Well, allot of quests are forced, like the main quest. You have to do it or everyone will die.

The Fountain of Youth: Basically, you find a book and it talks about
the fountain of youth with some clues of where to find it, you follow
the trail and the quest reward after finding it is a level up.

Perhaps something not as similar to the real world myth like a fake
'spring of sprightliness'. A rumor is spread about, possibly a few
books writen also and when word reaches the player perhaps he or she
can investigate the truth behind it. Maybe a necromancer is luring
folks out to a natural spring and knocking them off when they arrive?
