The Essence of Magicka and the Enemies of Knowledge
From the notes of Lorciidean Ventersi, House Telvanni
In the Dawn Era, as Mundus was crafted from the corpses of the
so-called 'Divines' of the Cyrodiilic Cult, one of the et'Ada was
placed in the Void; a gateway to the ethereal powers that inhabitants
of Lorkhan's Craftwork call 'magicka.' He attempted to withdraw from
the creation of Nirn, and was thus shattered; not unlike Lorkhan
himself, actually, which resulted in the creation of those skygems that
light our sky after his greater remains, the sun, have set on the
horizon. But what exactly IS this magicka? What power does it hold? The
mere commoner might often find himself asking these things, be he a
peasant, an aspiring student of House Telvanni, or a wretched Associate
in the Galerion's guild of amateurs. The answer is quite simple; in
fact, the essence of magicka is simply the essence of Magnus's demise.
Magnus himself lives on as the largest hole in the void, a gateway to
the Beyond, to Aetherius. My studies in magicka over the course of the
centuries (thankfully remaining relatively interrupted in my secluded
fortress, as the events of the world can prove to be most hindering to
a scholar's studies, always with their trivial little wars). Magicka is
the supreme power of Mundus, and is its soul and blood. It is the
Divine Power from the Outer Realms, beyond the Void and even Oblivion.
It is the law of the Earthbones.
Some, unfortunately, would seek to limit the study of magicka on
grounds of trivial and ever-changing dynamics regarding 'ethics' and
'regulations.' The most notable of these is the Mages' Guild, who has
been an ever-present obstacle in the study of what they call 'profane
arts,' such as necromancy and even Shadow Magic (which even I am not an
authority on, which is quite a feat in the way of knowledge... any
curious student or scholar who would wish madness on themself should
seek out Skelos Undriel, if he yet lives. I have fallen out of touch
with the Shadowmage, and know not if he's passed on; the only other
Shadowmages I know only by name: Pergan Asuul and Azra Nightwielder. I
will address my own knowledge of this arcane practice in another
portion of my notes). These who would interfere with the acquisition of
knowledge are as sinful and despicable as those they insist on
disrupting, for what is the art of sorcery if not a continual
scholarship; a pursuit of knowledge in its entirety?
The Mages' Guild charges Mannimarco with some sort of alleged
'opposition,' though it was Galerion who interfered with the Worm
King's studies. By Telvanni code of conduct it was a trespass by
Galerion and the Psijics, which leaves Mannimarco entirely justified in
outright retaliation. Galerion received what was brought by his
intrusion; he lies dead and yet Mannimarco lived on, at least until the
most obscure happenings in the West some years back. Admittedly I am
unaware of his current whereabouts, as I have spent the last few
decades studying extensively various subjects... Though Altmer by
blood, Mannimarco is far more respectable in his actions than the rest
of his pretentious kin.
In short, I seek to publish this excerpt from my notes as an
encouragement to young student of magicka looking for more than the
Mages' Guild can offer. In fact, I encourage any reader of this book to
look into the 'black arts' as well as the 'honorable' schools of magic,
or reject the title of scholar entirely, as none who would reject these
acts deserve such a term bestowed on them.
