Remember to stay away from the heavy Ayleid influence from Cyrodiil – this is a different province with different inhabitants.

I was looking on Imperial Library and I found some lore information I think you should know. High Rock had a very heavy High Elf presence until much later than Cyrodiil (this explains, among other things, why the Bretons are Half-Elf, Half-Human).

(The PGE 1 is shamelessly pro-Imperial and very biased, but it does mention a lot of very important things that the more impartial PGE 3 doesn't touch on).

It took a lot of wars to drive the Altmer out of High Rock, and they held on for the longest in the West Reach region (the bit on the border with Skyrim). This is also the least developed area, so there are probably still quite a lot of Altmer ruins there (everywhere else they were almost certainly recycled to build castles like the roman ruins in Europe, meaning we could add a bit of variety to castles by putting some Ayleid stones in the basement foundations).

The biggest Altmer ruins are the ones surrounding Adamantine Tower in the Iliac Bay Island, a tiny part of which are still inhabited by the last High Elves in High Rock, the Direnni Family.

Perhaps this doesn't fit into your vision for High Rock and there's a good reason you've decided not to include elf ruins. I just thought you should know about it that's all!

Well they aren't exactly Ayleid ruins but Aldmeri ones, just something to keep in mind. the only information on aldmeri ruins we have is a picture in the 3rd PGE, and it looks fairly close to Ayleid ones (though much more Gothic imho), so I think a retextured version of Ayleid mixed with some other sets or custom meshes would be a good way to go.

Yes you're quite right. I just said "Ayleid" because it escaped me what the Mer up there were actually called. The only name I came across was Direnni, but that's just the name of the ruling family, not the nation.

I agree with the retex idea. We could give the impression that it's made of a different kind of stone to the ruins in Cyrodiil. Grey, do you think? Or maybe black?

As you pointed out Deeza, the ruins in question would be most frequent in the Western Reach area (which confusingly is actually the *eastern* half of the province). When I devised the dungeon claims post (from the mod design document) which you quoted, I was working from TES2 sources, and of course the Ayleids weren't even a glimmer in Bethesda's collective eye at that point. :)

This is exactly the type of Lore we need to dig up for Eastern High Rock. I do still stand on the idea that I would like to keep the Ayleid influence down to a dull roar, mainly to leave room for modder creativity and to keep it from becoming too much of a recycle of Cyrodiil. Does this mean there will be no Ayleid ruins? Absolutely not! We just don't want to trip over them every ten feet or so as is done in vanilla OB.

Good work!

Good job!

Here's some more specific information on the Direnni ruins in the West Reach:

The Western Reach is actually the easternmost section of the Breton lands; its name derives from its location on Skyrim's western border. During the First Empire, it was incorporated as one of the Holds of Skyrim, and many Nords settled in its rolling hills and pleasant valleys. But they paid a terrible price during the Dissolution of Skyrim's Empire; the Aldmeri retook the Western Reach with a vengeance, slaughtering the Nord colonists to a man; precious little Nord blood flows in the veins of today's Reachmen. As a hedge against future incursions from Skyrim, the Aldmeri fashioned the Western Reach into an impregnable bastion. Thus, the Western Reach remained under Elven rule the longest of any part of High Rock, and the legacy of this dark sojourn can still be seen today.

It's from the 1st PGE.
