Here is an edited repost of some of the concept flora for the old project, with the original photographs restored. There will be two initial sections to this post - Mushrooms/Fungi and Trees. A third section where we will start collecting lore based plants from books and other sources for development will follow these.

Mushrooms and Fungi

Breton Ink Cap
Commonly Found In: Cool ,damp locations, (valleys, lakes at lower elevation, mixed coniferous and deciduous forests)
Proposed Alchemic Properties: Resist shock, damage health, damage endurance, shield
Harvested Portion: Mushroom cap only.
Native Uses: Inks and dyes, alchemy
Source/Inspiration: Common Ink Cap Mushroom

Notes: Ink cap in real life is a common variety of mushroom. There are likely many variations on it, so a variety of this could grow in many places and might have different properties, based on where it's found.

In TES terms, there could easily be Nord, Elswyr and Black Marsh variations, if those provinces wanted them. If not, it could simply be native to High Rock.

Winter Chanterelle
Commonly Found In: Forests at middle elevations
Proposed Alchemic Properties: Restore endurance, resist frost, drain strength, spell reflection.
Harvested Portions: Cap and/or stalk.
Native Uses: Food, alchemy
Source/Inspiration: Common Winter Chanterelle Mushroom

Notes: This is a common edible mushroom used for cooking. It prefers fall and early winter seasons and can survive early frosts. In High Rock, the mushroom would likely be found sharing border space in central and northern wooded areas with clouded funnel cap. This would likely be at the upper edge of the chaterelle’s elevation range.

Due to the hardiness of this particular mushroom, it could also possibly be found in Skyrim.

Giant Winecap
Commonly Found In: Hardwood forests or any location where hardwood is decaying (damp storage areas, lumber camps, etc.)
Proposed Alchemic Properties: Restore magica, resist fire, drain willpower, damage speed
Harvested Portions: Cap and stalk
Native Uses: Food, alchemy
Source/Inspiration: Common Wine Cap Mushroom

Notes: The giant wine cap is a Breton oddity. It has been used for centuries by mages, healers and alchemists for brewing two highly beneficial potions - one to restore Magica and the other to protect the user from flame.

The first property is likely due to the mushroom’s affect on the imbiber’s will power, since it temporarily drains the will and converts it to raw magica through a process not yet understood. (Refinement can remove the draining effect and will still permit a potent restorative to be brewed.) The second beneficial property is thought to come from the fungus’ predisposition to growing in fire-resistant hardwood chips.

Side effects of eating the raw, unrefined mushroom in small quantities are known to include both the draining of willpower and a mild lethargy that causes the imbiber to become sluggish. Cooking would appear to remove the toxins that cause this. Giant wine cap is seen as a delicacy and is often added to stews or soups. They are also found served in a red wine sauce as a common Breton side dish.

The giant wine cap is natively found in hardwood forests and prefers the moderate temperatures of spring and fall. It cannot survive extremely cold temperatures and is thus found most frequently in the south-western portions of High Rock at lower elevations. Alchemists and farmers also cultivate it in piles of hardwood chips.

Trees

High Rock Red Cedar
Commnly Found In: moist, cool to warm climes, bark is a warm red brown in colour.
Suggeted Common Locations:
a) The Illiac Bay coastline from Gelnnpoint to Reachport (possibly partway to Raven Spring
b) The south-western section of the province up to as far north as Westcastle
c) Some more northern pockets in scattered areas of high rainfall and moderated temperatures
Source/Inspiration: Western Redcedar

Notes: Might be found in higher elevations if there was enough rain. This tree would not deal well with outright arctic conditions, so it would be rare to non-existant in the north-most portions of High Rock. Pockets of the tree could survive if rain and temperature permitted.

Red cedar can reach enormous girths and heights, but it would likely be best to keep this tree average size in-game, to prevent framerate issues.

Concept Flora - Trees - Breton Oak Reply to this Post Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Posts Report Post to a Moderator       IP Information Go to the top of this page

Breton Oak
Commnly Found In: drier woodlands, meadows, grasslands and open rocky areas.
Suggested Common Locations:
a) Elevated plains and valleys in the Kurallian and Wrothgarian Mountains
b) Dry valleys in the interior of the Western Reach
c) Some more northern pockets in scattered areas of low rainfall
Source/Inspiration: This tree comes from the Garry Oak found in the southern portion of the Lower Mainland and the southwestern edge of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada.

Notes: Breton oaks tend to have a miniature ecosystem around them often described as “fairy-tale-like”, made up of butterflies, mosses, wildflowers and alchemic ingredient-bearing plants. The tree is adapted to a drier climate and can survive drought.

The tree, it's leaves and associated ecosystem:
