Region generation discussion thread Reply to this Post Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Posts Report Post to a Moderator       IP Information Go to the top of this page

First of all, is the heightmap TOYB has got hold of very similar to this map produced by Braggi and Gyssar:

http://www.silgrad.com/wbb2/attachment.p...achmentid=14395

If so, the we're away and can use the regions as marked on this map. Otherwise, we may have to adjust them to fit.

The second thing we need to do is work out the climate, vegetation etc for each region. I'm guessing that in general, the south will be more like Colovia in Cyrodiil (it is next to Hammerfell after all), the north of the "horn" will be icy and cold but not frozen, the mountains will be snowbound, and the West Reach will be very much like Skyrim.

Comments/suggestions? Any other major features (forests etc.) that have not been accounted for?

Of note I suggest looking at this site as it lists the climate of each region (seen in Daggerfall, north and east High Rock aren't featured), aswell as screenshots of each region.

The mountains extend to around North Point, and that area is all Snowy (which has lots of lore backing this up, foremost being Shadow Key, which features the land around here in the mountains in Snow, and indeed even featuring a glacier).

I assume the Ilessan Hills would be rolling hills, with pockets of small forested patches dispersed throughout it, somewhat like this.

The Wrothgarian Mountains would be a mixture of craggy areas, mixed in with grassy highlands. New rocks and flora for this area is essential, but due to the fact that it wouldn't be very densily populated, it can be hand detailed later.

The area around Camlorn is lush, and Flowers are abundant there (hence the Flower Festival held there), which settles down as the coast approaches (which mainly ends in clifffaces) which would end up looking something like this.

- I'll post more about it later.

That first link is a truly excellent resource, and makes this job a hell of a lot easier. I'd almost forgotten it existed.

The other pics are helpful too. For some reason this reminds me - wasn't the isle of Betony going to be made as a teaser mod? I'm sure I remember someone mentioning that, and wondered how far they got. Was it landscaped on the heightmap you've got now?

Also, I'll see what happened to that guy who was remaking Direnni Tower and the isles of Balfiera, find out if he's made any progress. Perhaps he has some new meshes we could use.

As for the Wrothgarian mountains, Sachiel has recently made some impressive custom rocks. Once he posts some screenshots we can see if they're suitable for this region.

Edit:
Here's an idea:
We could name the regions after the separate kingdoms that appeared in TES2, and use their borders to mark out the regions (although obviously ones adjacent to each other would have very similar region gen presets). That way, we stir in a little lore that might otherwise be lost in Oblivion's much smaller scale.

Yup, that's a good idea, anyway the old kingdoms all have specific types of distinct landscapes, a lot of the time actually mentioned in lore; for example, the Ykalon Forest.
However the problem is that we can't use the region borders from Daggerfall, as High Rock is messed up in it (which is blatantly obvious) so really it's more of a 'make it up yourself' type of thing, while kinda looking at the Daggerfall for inspiration.

As for Betony, the old teaser mod was a complete shambles, and out of scale. Currently the Isle of Betony is very small on the Height Map, but it can be taken (to a degree), out of scale with the rest of High Rock to be alittle bigger (to about just under the size of TR's Stirk). However, it's got architecture especially made for it, and some more on it's way :)

With Direnni Tower, I'm still very keen on your own design of it Deeza, which I think it perfect. I can very easily model the center shaft and an outside tower (done in the Ayleid style), and as you mentioned previously the layers outside of that can be made in Ayleid ruin pieces (which is rather perfect). Then it can be furnished with some more unique pieces (statues at the like).

Yes, Sachiel's rocks are excellent, and I very much hope to see them in the mountains. However, these (if used) will be hand placed after the Height Map has been region gen'd, and the files will be packaged up in the resource.esm :)
