Uncovering the map as the player goes... |
|
I have had an idea:
How about having the map reveal the exact locations of cities only when
the player reaches them. Basically all I mean by this is not showing
cities on the map initially (not having them drawn onto the actual
ingame world map the player has), like Oblivion does with small
villages. Or like Morrowind does with all settlements.
I loved the way in MW how you'd follow the roadsigns until you saw an
unvisited settlement on the horizon for the first time, only knowing it
was there because you'd seen it on the paper map or heard about it
ingame.
What I was thinking was giving the player a Skyrim map when they first
enter the province (ie they pick one up from the Census and Excise at
the border), like what KotN does with the wayshrines.
I believe this would greatly enhance the sense of adventure, not
knowing exactly where you are with GPS precision in relation to a
settlement. Thoughts?

I suggested this before and I totally agree.

But of course, even though it may require somewhat longer dialogs to
explain where you must go (MW Redoran herd quest anyone
).

Maps and signposts will be the main means of orientation.

Exactly.
What about my idea of getting a book-object map from the Cencus and
Excise? For those players who actually think to have a gander around in
there

I love this idea!!
I think it?d be awesome if it were so!! I also have fond memories of finding a settlement in Morrowind using the roadsigns...
It definetly has my vote!!

I like the idea
I enjoyed using the map in Oblivion to find Pale Pass. Having to do that for all the towns would make the game more enjoyable.

I would place the big cities on the map, but leave the little towns off
it. It would seem a little strange to not have any large and well known
cities on the map. |

Is there a way to have the map behave like it did in MW?
Otherwise, that would ruin what I had in mind =(
I had this in mind:
The player's 'ingame' map is basically a piece of paper that the player
uses to mark out places of interest as he reaches them. It has nothing
on it, but things are marked out as the player reaches them. HOWEVER I
forgot to take into account that roads could not appear on the map like
that (it would work for cities because the gates would show up on the
map)
Damn.

Most of our cities will be 'open', so there will be few (if any) gates on the map.

Yeah that was my initial thinking; I now realise that that method wouldn't be possible.
What about the big ingame map uncovering as the player goes though, like in MW?

Not posible. It *Might* be posible using a external aplication (Like
OBSE) to check the player's position and record where they have been
and using that infomation set the parts of the map to black. But for
this to work you'd need a hell of a lot of script, both CS Scripting
and scripting for external programs. And it would most likely cause major Fps loss.

Oh well. It would have been nice. So there's nothing under Gamesettings in the CS I take it
Perhaps the player could recieve some other cool book-item map then.
Like a detailed map of somewhere showing smaller villages etc, like
MW's paper map did.
So the ingame map would show the major roads and major cities drawn on
it already (Riften, Windhelm, Whiterun, Falkreath, Winter Hold,
Solitude, Snowhawk, Dawnstar), then the player could use the smaller
more detailed map(s) to locate smaller settlements and points of
interest.

The mayor cities and major roads should be visible on the in-game map,
but the smaller settlements can be shown (when uncovered) just like
dungeons/shrines/inns are shown in OB by default... by the small icons.

Yes I know, but what I now mean is the player could get a map that shows them on it, like the KotN wayshrine map.

There is a mod which I saw on TES Source, which does something like this to the vanilla map I think..
Can?t remember the name though, but if anyone wants to check it out I?m
sure it could be found easily by applying ones googling skills to
tessource search function...
