Why is there not any silver armor in any TES game? I was wondering
about this while playing OB just a while ago and thought why are silver
weapons are everywhere but not silver armor? Anyways I thought that I
would post it here in Skyrim forums because I thought it would go good
with the werewolf stuff you guys are working on. If you guys made it as
some of the new armor being added with Skyrim maybe a script could be
put on it to where if a werecreature hits it it hurts it. It would make
since that the nords have found a few better ways to fight off
werewolves since they deal with them more than the other provinces (I
think). Silver armor would be the next step to killing them right? |

I'd absolutely (no, absolutely no....OBGBEREBGREOLY) LOVE to see the
Nordic Silver armor & weapons from Solstheim into Skyrim

There was no Nordic silver armor...it was Nordic Mail. There were only
Nordic Silver weapons in Solstheim. Only silver armor in TES III was
the cuirass (the type that Falco wore) and the helmet...ugly @ss
helmet.

horrid weapons.
You aren't going to hit someone with your armor, and silver would offer
less defense vs steel or anything else (unless you want to break
lore....)
As it is, silver does slightly less damage than steel. The werewolf
idea is interesting, though I thought the silver was supposed to be
blessed, and even then, it should puncture the skin of the werewolf for
maximum effectivenss.
But there's a reason why there was no silver armor in any game, which
is because the only point of silver weapons was to make daedra and
ghosts more challanging opponents |
I agree, an armor made of silver is just silly... however, a steel platemail with a silver coating is normal.
Here is an example of silvered armor: LINK

...which is exactly how I imagine the silver armor to work.
Of course an armor made only from silver would be useless, but in
reality it is steel armor coated with silver (as Kodama pointed out).
The silver is mainly there for looking cool and as a status symbol, but
it can have a use for holding back the attacks of werewolves and other
silver-fearing creatures.

Hmmm, on the topic of maleability and all, wouldn't Iron armor actually
offer better protection than steel, because steel bends and dents-- it
would probably wind up twisting out of shape in battle. Also wasn't
steel not discovered until the 1800s? |

No.
The French used steel armor in the 15th centuryAD, modern mill steel is
from the 1800s, there are many types of steel alloys now.
Steel is very easy to make, you just add some carbon to iron.
Iron bends and dents more then steel because it's softer then steel, a
combination of hard and soft steel is even better, soft bends and
dents, hard cracks, but put them together and the resulting steel alloy
can take a lot more punishment.
For example: if you would make a sword of just iron, it will bend and
it wont hold a sharp edge well, make a sword of hard steel and it will
shatter, a katana made by Gassan Sadatoshi was twisted to see how much
it could take, and it twisted seven times before it broke (the Japanese
had a martensite steel alloy with steel of various quality grades and
carbon percentages).
