Spearthane: a Skyrim text adventure |
|
Hi! I think what you're doing here is excellent, and with luck will
prompt Bethesda to make a much better TES V, if it takes place in
Skyrim.
Since I only run Oblivion on a PS3, and my home computer is Linux, I
can't run the construction set. So I'm taking a slightly different tack
to contribute to the community.
I'm writing a text adventure, set in Skyrim shortly after the dawn of
the fourth age, while Skyrim recovers from daedric invasion during the
Oblivion Crisis. I announced the effort on a thread in the Bethesda fan fiction forum, and I'm maintaining a blog to coordinate the effort.
If you would like to contribute to the text adventure, please let me
know. You can comment on anything in the blog, as well. I'd of course
love for you to play it, and let me know what you think of it. It's
still very early in development (see the Features page).
Thanks, and good luck with Skyrim for Oblivion!

Actually, the text adventure runs on any platform with a Z-code
interpreter (a virtual machine, like Java). So you don't have to have
Linux to play it. Just download the Z-code interpreter and the game, and go.

I'm glad you got it to work! I agree that the directions are pretty
basic. I figure the descriptions of everything will improve, once I
actually create all the main settlements and towns on the overland map.
The text map in your possession at the start of the game refers to a
graphical map by Vality, on the web. Several other books in the game
also refer to text on the web. This lets me keep the size of the game
file down, obviously at the cost of some immersion. Do you think this
is a good tradeoff?
I will eventually have to go to a Glulx interpreter, rather than a
Z-code interpreter, since I don't see this staying under 512k, and
Glulx supports images. But I'd like to delay that switch a bit, since I
haven't checked out the Glulx interpreters yet, and Z-code runs on many
more machines.

To help gameplay, I included an extension by Andre Kosmos which always
lists the exits of a room, whether you've been there or not. It tells
you the name of the room if you have been there. You can turn it on and
off with "exits on" and "exits off", and see the list of exits with the
command "exits".
I also changed room descriptions to only appear the first time you
visit. You can control this with the commands "verbose" and "brief".
You'll see these changes in release 4.

That's very generous, thank you kind sir. I'll attribute everything I
borrow. I haven't seen a better source for both relevant lore and very
creative extensions, so this will make a huge difference.
Since I'm releasing Spearthane under the Creative Commons, feel free to
use my original game and blog text in Skyrim for Oblivion.
