I think the rug could use some tassles on the edge and a higher rez
texture. With what you said was the total poly count, you could easily
spare several more triangles for the table as well. |

Like Sieg said, you could definitely use a higher res texture for the
table and the rug. What dimensions are you using? Most stuff in
Oblivion is around 512x512. |

The scale kind of looks off. Is there a way to compare it next to a character model?
You could definitely add more segments to the table, the round part is
very blocky. Since the rest is pretty low poly, you can get away with
smoothing that part out.
As for textures, it may not just be 'make it higher res', can you post the UVs? (For table and mug)

Oh excellent, a fellow Mayan. I bet you use a version with nif plugin support though, dontcha? =(
As for your portfolio piece, one thing that strikes me is the lighting,
that ambient light needs to be toned wayyyyy down, and made up for with
other lights (point, and possibly a directional). It also looks as
though you've used some area lights, from the look of the black shelf
(see how the top of the top shelf is lit, but the back said shelf is
dull) which are generally best avoided for that very reason. Try using
*more* lights (point, volume) in more strategic places, as opposed to
area lights. You could also try setting your spotlights to quadratic as
opposed to linear (though you'll need to increase their intensity
several thousand times for them to be visible!), and setting their
filters to 15 or so on their depth map shadows. Photorealistic lighting
and mental ray is a pain in the arse but DEFINATELY worth it; it's what
I'm studying in class right now which is why I remember all this stuff
lol.

I have tried and tried to mess with spotlights, but have gotten
nothing, and I tried different types of lights to no avail...I will try
your post out though.
I have the Nif Exporter, but have not figured out how to use
it...everytime I tried to export something, it would never show up in
the nif viewer well? it would white outlines looking all janke!
Thanks for the lighting tips, I may try out some new things.
