@ FLESH
Hope it is alright that I post my progress on the Silvenar palace here;
it just seemed to me to be a good and organized place, unless you
decide something better suited, just let me know.
Well it is slow going, but at least it is going nonetheless. What I
have plan for this palace is to use the waysrhine as a base object and
modify it to our liking.
http://img446.imageshack.us/my.php?image=shrinebu7.jpg
I started modifing at the pillar by creating vines and having them run up the pillar from the ground.
So far I have tried several techniques and found that I will have to
create my own vines instead of using Oblivions mesh as this will be a
lot easier, just time consuming.
Here is a detailed test pic of the low poly vine.
http://img446.imageshack.us/my.php?image=vine01qe2.jpg
More to come soon.

Its fine, I need to ask you something, are you basing this on the
picture I gave in the Ext. models thread? I like it so far, that shrine
will need to be pretty big to fit a palace though.

Well a palace, isn't that what you are making? I meant the the shrine
should be the size of the palace, so yeah we understand each other.

You know your right, the more I think about it the more it makes sense?
Scaling this ruin as it is will just make it look weird so I thought why not this one instead?

Do you mean scale that one? I think it would look good with a palace in there

Right; scaling the wayshrine just looks weird.
I like the new version and think it will scale much better, I'll do some testing and post an in game screen.

Just a couple of things to note about this palace, because it is going
to be huge, it will have to be placed in the editor section by section.
So?
Keep the floor base or get rid of it?
Increase the curve or decrease it?
http://img228.imageshack.us/my.php?image=spob8.jpg
I?ll think of a few more things in a bit, but for now I have to finish up this vine and add texture to it.

We can keep the floor base. For the curve we must first see how it will go around the palace.
Welcome back Ace

The palace shouldn't have a wall, it's very open to all visitors, so I
think having it open style and using the arches around it would be good

A
frozen scarlet burst of twisted, uneven spires as if a rival sun
rising. A blossom the size of a village, where courtiers and servants
resembled nothing so much as insects walked about it sucking its ichor.
Entering over a bent petal-like bridge, the three walked through the
palace of unbalanced walls. Where the partitions bent close together
and touched, there was a shaded hall or a small chamber. Where they
warped away from one another, there was a courtyard. There were no
doors anywhere, no any way to get to the Silvenar but by crossing
through the entire spiral of the palace, through meetings and bedrooms
and dining halls, past dignitaries, consorts, musicians, and many
guards. |
That's Dance in a fire's description of it
quote: |
The
audience chamber of the Silvenar was an enormous dome where the walls
bent from bowl-shaped at the base inward to almost meet at the top. A
thin ray of sunlight streamed through the fissure hundreds of feet
above, and directly upon theSilvenar, who stood upon a puff of
shimmering gray powder. For all the wonder of the city and the palace,
the Silvenar himself looked perfectly ordinary. An average, blandly
handsome, slightly tired-looking, extra-ordinary Wood Elf of the type
one might see in any capitol in the Empire. It was only when he stepped
from the dais that Scotti noticed an eccentricity in his appearance. He
was very short. |

Well it should be curved, and it should fit neatly around the Palace.
So I guess the Palaca is required to make a final decision

ok well I seem to be getting the hang of this concept, yet it's still unclear a little.

I really can't picture it in my mind Ace. I need to see the model, and
is there no way to avoid scaleing in the editor? That can be inacurate
sometimes.

Yeah it can be avoided, it's just to get an accurate scale it would be
easier and less time consuming if scaled in the editor.
The editor scales objects in all three directions (x,y,z) so this is
why I say how wide should it be, this way when it comes time to scale
the object the width is already taken into account...
From the story description it sounds to be like a huge object/palace,
with 100 foot columns holding the dome for the audience area. I guess I
can just use my best judgment. |

I have started on the taller one, but without a left view I can only
assume this thing is going to be round which is no problem. I only had
a few program CTD when working on this project, so hopefully 3ds max
will cooperate and let me finish a draft.
Here is what I have started on with an hour of work and 3 program CTD... Not much to look at the moment, but give it a while.
http://img99.imageshack.us/my.php?image=startar1.jpg
Now here is a cut up version of the concept art, the areas in black I
assume will be open, but covered in vines from pillar to pillar? And
for the areas colored in red, I would like to do the same as the areas
in black...
http://img79.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sivpalacetm7.jpg
Now do we want this to sit directly leveled on the terrain, or hitched
up, like it was grown from a tree and have the very bottom base (the
underneath) look like roots? |

week. I wante to go on more but the computer at the hotel broke, or the
internet to be precise. The tecnitian that was 'supposed' to come in an
hour, in reality came in 5 days. Slow people them canarians.

Good news; bad news.
First the good news is that I am able to get an idea for the depth and
have a plan to get er done, the bad news is 3ds Max tends to CTD when I
make changes to the structure (modeling it) and corrupts the save
files; even the auto-back file gets corrupt?
Can?t figure it out, good thing I own a license and the program so I
sent the error messages to Autodesk and hopefully they hear my cries,
but it has been over 3-1/2 weeks and no reply?
I like the picture, but it is way too small? I sit at least a good 5 to
8 feet from my monitor on a couch looking at a 60? plasma T.V screen.
I?ll continue to work on this, but it will take me some time with the
program crashing like this, ya might want to find another person to
help if ya can. |

hmmm, 'the Case of the Curious Krisi' - is that an alliterative book claim coming on?
Just a feeling that there is a connection between your tree house and
the hanging house design-wise... maybe? Maybe you inspired him, or you
both saw something else...
why am I writing this? Have a nice day!

Just re-discovered this wonderful description of Silvenar from Dance in the Fire:
quote: |
Silvenar - a magnificent pile of faded shades of green, red, blue and white, shining with crystalline residue... |
quote: |
"Silvenar
had once been a blossoming glade in the forest, but owig to some spell
or natural cause the tree's sap began flowing with translucent liqueur.
The process of the sap flowing and hardening over the colorful trees
had formed the web of the city." |
