Ok like some of you know I'm a student of Game Design and Development,
although I'm firstyear I know a couple of things/tricks that might be
of help, I'll proberbly extent this topic in time. Ok lets get started
with the things relevant to Oblivionmodding
- Water and heavy combat aren't a good combination, it both takes a lot from your pc, try to limit this.
- More then 3 NPC's in combat isn't very smooth either. Try not to
exceed this number unless of course some final battle, but most of the
time, not more then 3 AI!
- Lightsources, lights are nice, esplecially HDR and Blooming. But
light is also a big performance hit, I think we all noticed the FPSdrop
in IC. Well each lightsource has a radius, you can see this in the CS.
For each lightsource that hits a pixel/model it has to be rendered
again, so 3 lightsources hitting the same pixel means it has to be
rendered 3 times extra, this is also why resolution can make such an
impact on performance.
- Further, all level design is about illusion, not only letting the
player belief the world is real, also to do this with as little as
possible. Sometimes lighting is very cool, but it works better with a
projected movie/loop (FEAR singleplayer demo has this)
Ok that's it for know that's relevant for Oblivion
