That's right, I forgot to post this a while back, ok just a few days
Anyway, I was playing OB and I was playing that Thief cave/pirateship
DLC. In the captain's diary he mentions "he had a whole fleet, even
some of those Bosmer ships with living sails". So I guess we need some
new art people
I have no clue how it looks honestly, any thoughts?

I'd imagine (and seeing as Skyrim has been rather inactive lately I'll
do some imagining here instead) that it's like a special tree as the
mast with large leaves which are tied into the shape of a sail to catch
the wind.
Although what would the rest of the boat be made out of? Rock????
Animal hair??? Or as a serious suggestion, bone? Whatever the material,
the boats in question probably could not be very big.

fingernails... fingernails yess....
as for living sails... maybe a fungus that grows from a sort of mast,
and it eats microorganisms in the air, but will only extend (like
canvas unfurling) when the wind is blowing (to maximize
micro-organismintake)
and occasionaly you see a small sea-bird stuck in the living fungal sail?

Some sort of Ivy/fungus that eats all small organism that fly into it?
So very small birds, bugs etc. Perhaps a mise that was stupid enough to
climb in the sail
As for a metarial to make the ship of well we could make a large
skeleton out of bones, then put some hides around it, finish it up with
tar. Should be waterthight. Then well I guess we really need a
swamparea to make all these boats

The rest of the boat could be alive, and more or less a tree...

A boat that can feel your movements on it and moves under your feet
when its uncomfortable, a living boat if you will. It could have been
done through magic to keep the wood in top condition or something.

Leaves could be used for canoes, but boats? Usually if you don't use
wood you use bark or twigs, both can't in this case... So either an
insect shell of bones and hides (and tar).

The sail lives, so it has to be organic. Bosmer use lots of plants, just don't hurt them

When you said creature I immedialty thought of such a squirrel. You're
right about that beast tongue, we should really use it, but I'm not
sure how well it could be used as a sail. You got to feed'm you know
So I put my money on the fungus. It would be nice if some more people have an opinion.

I think it coud work heh, could even not be a squirrel and instead some
other beast with large wind catching limbs of some sort - cant think of
anything at the moment but I'm sure theres room fo further thought
there.
How about an actual plant? With the stalk as a the mast and the petals
as sails? I wish I could draw but I cant so I'll let others
conceptualise that on paper
Got a cracking image in my mind though...

I love that concept art up there. I never really thought about boats,
would they be grown like some of our houses. Also we would need some
big creatures to have those type of ribs

I like the idea of the entire boat being alive, like a water plant of
sorts. It's not hurting the plant, and it would be really cool. |

Reality.
You are not going to nail a squirrel to the Mast, are you?
I think we can safely ignore the squirrel bit
Hows about adapting Lutemoth's concept that seems to draw on the Netches of Morrowind
Instead of parasol-shaped, start with rectangular Valenwood Creatures
that hang themselves from Tree Branches to catch vegetable and animal
matter falling from higher branches, plus unwary creatures
They still live in Valenwood - watch out for the more mobile and active varieties that are big enough to eat a Human or Mer!
Then the Bosmer began to use them as as rubbish bins and a source of leather.
Later they attached them to spindles to power grinders to gind bone meal and such
Until finally hung from crossyards of ships as living sails?
