Parasites... on trees... Traps in the forest... Would make the exterior
experience a bit more like a dungeon crawl, which is how a forest
should be!

Agreed!
Parasites, will that be plants or creatures?

if the wasp uses the actual leaves to form the galls then it is
parasitism as it damages the tree (i.e. the tree gains nothing from the
relationship between it and the wasp)

I did have an idea involving wasps, just to sort of help out with all the green-pact troubles
have you though about a district (possibly upper-class) that is made
from a wasps nest? There are many type of wasp that build from scraps
of wood etc. and for inhabitants, all the corridors etc. would already
be there. obviously the nest would have to be abandoned by the wasps...
that could be an interesting turn of events - swarm of giant wasps
return home eeeep!!!

Actually, the gall wasp is considered an inquiline, and not a parasite of the tree.
An inquiline definition: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inquiline
"In zoology, an inquiline (from Latin inquilinus, "lodger" or "tenant")
is an animal that lives commensally in the nest, burrow, or dwelling
place of an animal of another species. For example, some organisms such
as insects may live in the homes of gophers and feed on debris, fungi,
roots, etc. The most ubiquitous types of inquiline are those found in
association with the nests of social insects, especially ants and
termites — a single colony may support dozens of different inquiline
species. The distinctions between parasites, social parasites, and
inquilines are subtle, and many species may fulfill the criteria for
more than one of these, as inquilines do exhibit many of the same
characteristics of parasites. However, parasites are specifically not
inquilines, because by definition they have a deleterious effect on the
host species, while inquilines do not."
I got that the gall wasp was an "inquiline", from here (scroll down page):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oak_Marble_gall
Lastly, galls can be made on buds, roots, leaves, stems, lots of plant parts, like said here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gall_wasp

Well, since I can't find a "Plants of Valenwood" thread, I'll post my idea here.
I really think we need to look into making a couple of plants that act
like Harrada (spelling?) in the plane of Oblivion. Killer plants that
strike back at the unknowing alchemist? Perfect for a giant forest. |
