Perhaps the Crypt of Hearts started out as the personal crypt of the
Direnni family. Once they were overthrown, the Kings of Shornhelm
wanted to imitate them, and continued to expand it and dig out new
sections, as eventually nobles and later merchant families made their
own additions, until after centuries of continuous extension it became
a cemetery for all the nobility and most of the wealthy of the whole of
High Rock. |

This is looking great!
I find myself actually eager to walk down the streets of the city once you get it finished.

Blah! I just had a look in Arena, and my designs are totally off! It
wouldn't matter so much, but I like Arena's Shornhelm
Would it be posible to split some of the assets over to another City
(e.g. Evermore), and allow me to desing two at a time? Obviously stuff
like the statue of the Sage is exclusive to Shornhelm, but my ideas for
the big manors surrounded by Hedges with pea gravel isn't how Shornhelm
should be portrayed -it's climate is like Skyrim, posibly why Shornhelm
fought for it, it reminded him of his homeland, and to reflect that, I
want to have a stronger nordic theme. In the end, I think is a wiser
decision, because it means more assets being made, giving the mod more
uniqueness (as I would be making unique things for both the redesigned
Shornhelm, and the other city to which some of the already made assets
would go to).
Obviously, it is a considerably larger workload, but it's not like we
have claims going left right and center here, and I probably won't
focus on the second city so much, so I can concentrate on getting
Shornhelm out of the way (then work more on the second city).
If I continue with the current production of the city as it is, I'll
probably get put off, feeling like I'm not being true to how Shornhelm
should be portrayed, and most likely lose interest, so if I was to take
on the second city, it would be a win-win really
Cheers,
TOYB

I understand completely. Apart from your own concerns, I know that it's
always difficult to work knowing that the lore monkeys will take shots
at you after all the hard work you've put in.
We now need to decide which other city those hedges would fit best in.
Given the climate, I think Camlorn would be a possibility, or Wayrest
itself. Wayrest's design has already been claimed, but I don't think
any modelling has been done yet. |

Deeza and TOYB:
Key point: Arena is technically "Proto-Lore." Add to that the fact that
all TES1 and 2 city layouts were simple squares, while you can do
pretty much anything you want with the layout in TES4. What that means
is that you have a fair bit of freedom.
Neither of you should let that game completely constrain your design
efforts. I have posted the Arena layouts for each of the cities as
inspiration, not as a hard and fast blueprint. Let me show you what I
mean using Jehanna, which faced exactly the same sort of challenge.
Attached below are the TES1 version of the city and my later concept
sketch for it. They don't look very similar, as you can see.
In the main post I put up proto-Lore suggestions for design and thos
might be a good source to draw from. When I sketched out my concept,
pretty much the only thing I kept from the TES 1 original was the river
running through the center of the city. I moved the palace location to
better fit the overall design and the history developed for the city
itself. So, use the proto-Lore guidelines, but don't stress too much on
them gang. We have lots of wide-open development territory, so feel
free to use it!
As far as Evermore is concerned, let me chew on that one. I'd like to
see what Shornhelm turns out like as you go here. (Don't let that stop
you from creating a sample lay out for Evermore if you so desire - I'll
see if I can get an OK from Gyssar to pass along the info from the
Design Document for you to play with in the mean time.)

Yeah, but I feel obligated to tweak the design, because I actually
enjoyed walking around Shornhelm in Arena, I liked it's style.
Anyway, redesigned entrance:
Just a couple of slight retexes, and a weather change
I feel really confident about this new direction, and I feel very inspired to do more design work
It doesn't change much to my oringinal design, the hedges will be kept,
just retexed, and the pond will become frozen over, and the Ironwoods I
had in the city will be changed to White Pines (snow version)
The ground texture will be changed to JMpath, instead of Pea gravel,
and my oringinal unique designs that no longer are being used, can be
used elsewhere (e.g. Evermore, which I would love to work on
simultaneously).
Cheers,

Actually, your snowy hedge texture looks even better than your first one.
Great stuff!
I can't wait to get the chance to walk around this place, not to mention your version of Evermore as well.

Actually, I see your point in the redesign now. Far be it from me to
discourage you from using the TES1 layout if that is what you like!
Further, your re-do here also fits the terrain that Shornhelm is
located in better - the city is located in the Kuralian Mountainss, on
a plateau and at a good height, so the snow just makes sense - it is
high enough that snow year-round would fit and it also give credence to
the use of either magic or greenhouses for temperate plant preservation
within the city.

Exactly!
Anyway, back to the lore of the City.
I was thinking that seeing as it's run by a council of three, that
Shornhelm would be where the Mage's Guild has it's headquarters (which
would make sense, seeing as the Sage is so close and his relevance to
the city, and being Archmagister), and tying in with the home team of
pre-dev arena for Shornhelm being the 'War Mages', integrated into
current lore, means it's the center for the Knights/Order of the Lamp
(the strong arm of the mages guild), so the three Councilers on the
Council would be the Archmagister (the Sage), the Archmage of the
Mage's Guild (who does the day-to-day running of the mage's guild
affairs, under the Archmagister) and the Archmage of the Order of the
Lamp (exactly like the Archmage of the Mage's Guild, except handles the
Order of the Lamp, and likewise looks up to the Archmagister). There
would also be a council room at the mage's guild here where once a
month, all of the guildhall leaders would meet up, with the
Archmagister, and both of the Archmages to discuss issues, etc.

This really deserves a folklore story to explain how it came about...
perhaps someone could tell you in the inn, over a few beers? |
It's the Sage, he has a very perculiar sense of humor, one day while
wandering the city, he visited The Rude Imp Tavern, delighting at the
name, and he had such a merry time inside, consuming a fair amount of
alcohol to the point he almost burnt down the Tavern in a magickal
inferno (luckily though he knew the spells reversal, even though he
slurred half the words). The next day he came back, and in recognition
of such a grand time, conjured up an Imp, petrified it on top of rock,
he then craved the rock with powerful magick, and what was left was a
founatain -and then water began to torrent out of it's bottom. In glee,
the Sage then did levitate into the sky, returning to his mountain
home, and the water did freeze, the Sage had not taken into account
that this would almost certainly happen (or did he?!?!).
Moral of the Story: The Sage is made of awesome.

And so is that statue.
Of course, it's even cooler because of the backstory.
