Ever since we Nords have settled and prospered in this land of Tamriel,
our people have been threatened. Whether by the wicked mer of old, or
the cruel divisions which brought Ysgramor's grand Empire for the Nords
crashing down into strife and conflict. And ever have we been able
fight off the brutal fist of extermination which characterizes those
who wish to defeat the Nords.
The Dunmer are one such foe. Their wicked magicks and cruel ambushes
would have pushed a lesser race away from fighting them; yet we Nords
do not fear battle. The recent assasination of our Emperor, and the
ensuing struggles within the Empire, have led to conflict and border
skirmishes erupting all along the border with Morrowind. Such battles
may have been relatively inconclusive and ill-coordinated, but they
were decisive in proving that we must strike quickly and decisively to
win.
Tactics to defeat such a foe; a foe who increasingly relies on guerilla
combat and small-scale skirmishes, must change with the times. As we
and our noble Orcish brothers in arms discovered, the Great Houses
stray away from the grand battles of old. Instead, we have found
ourselves trekking through inhospitable terrain in vain hope of an
engagement; in vain hope of our foe's honour. The Dunmer, for their
part, have retreated more often than assembled. Ambushed, more often
than attacked.
To be sure, we have discovered much to further our future campaigns.
Among our discoveries has been the use of natural surroundings and
weather to our advantage. The elven foe may know the surroundings
better, but the Nordic warrior knows the battle and extremes of cold
best. We are reminded of Hurunsholf the Tall, who in recent skirmishes
took the heads of seven Indoril Ordinators back home to decorate his
home. His revolutionary ideas of counter-ambush and the use of
hound-wolves to scout ahead saved many a sword arm from heathen arrow.
And yet, despite our successes, we still did not completely secure the
territories. Centres of resistance in the patchwork of villages ensured
the enemy a warm hearth and a hearty meal. My theory on the natural
extension of combating this type of enemy may seem radical; yet it is
the only way we may win victory against the heretical resistance
assembled against us.
We must burn the villages our enemy occupies, and put the inhabitants
to flight or to sword. This way, we not only secure the area for future
colonization: we also cut the food supplies to their armies, to their
warriors, to their temples, to their cities, and to their forts.
This, my comrades in arms, is the true way we can achieve victory.
