Language of the Nords? |
|
Does TES lore mention anything about the language of the Nords? Do they
(or did they) speak a language other than the "common tongue"?
If TES lore doesn't mention it, and no one else has come up with the language of the Nords, I have some ideas for one.

Nords like all races speak the Imperial (English), although with
something like a Scottish? accent. But for native languages, I'd go for
Swedish, Estonian, Norwegian, Icelandic, Finnish or Danish.

I haven't heard any Nords with a Scottish like accent in Oblivion...
I'll write down my ideas for the language tonight.

Well I'm not going to post my ideas right away because I am going to
make it as a book for the game and I don't want my ideas stolen. I'll
work on it today and post it here when I'm done. |

There are powerful connections between the Scandinavian races and the
Scots, not the least of which is featured in the legend of 'Beowolf'.
The simplest history lesson you will get as a kid in England is that
the Vikings invaded Northern England's shores and eventually settled
there in patches, especially in York from where my family owe their
ancestry and a slightly re-phrased form of a Nordic surname.
However, stronger connections were forged with the Scots where the
Vikings held most of their settlements and this identification is
reflected in both the landscapes and cultures of Scotland and the
Scandinavian countries.
It may help VinlandViking to know that I've recorded a generic race
voice set for Nords in a Scottish accent and featuring various unique
lines drawn from the lore of Skyrim. Information about this starts
here: Nord Voice Lines .
Of course, it would be great to do a genuine Danish accent as Danes are
the more commonly known 'Vikings', at least as far as the Brits are
concerned. However, no one stepped up to the task and I hoped my
Scottish Nords would suffice....personally, I love the Scottish accent,
as do many.
If you wished me to add lines according to the language you create and
you felt that this accent matched sufficiently with it then I might be
interested in collaborating.....not now, though....too busy!

Well I was just going to write a book about the language and evolution
of the Nords using Old Norse as the base of their language. I wasn't
talking about the accents that they have when speaking the common
Cyrodiilic/Imperial/whatever you want to call it language.
I do want to try to create a whole history of the language for them
though since Bethesda didn't bother to do it. Let me finish writing the
book (well, one of them) and post it here before we continue any other
work on their language. |

My bad, a little piece of geographical ignorance (or amnesia for that matter
).

Is there any evidence supporting more than one native language in Skyrim?

Erm, no, not that I've heard of. But a theory that might
be plausible is that the Greybeards communicate in an Atmoran
accent/language (of course, provided they actually speak during some
rare moments) as well as citizens of a more "old-school community" such
as Dawnstar.

One of the ingame books mentions the Greybeards speaking, and I did
have another idea for their language being Atmoran in descent. |

I know that 'Thuuum' is simply that word itself shouted at a very high
volume, enough to incapacitate the enemy. There may have been other
words of power that crossed over from the original Atmoran dialect.
