Town Ambience Reply to this Post Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Posts Report Post to a Moderator       Go to the top of this page

I've had this idea for some time now and now that I'm pacing along on the CS, I was wondering if I could make this happen. Also I'd like to see what everyone else thinks. Has anyone ever played Baldur's Gate 2? I'm sure some of you have...Well when you first leave the first awful dreaded dungeon in the beginning, your cast in this huge town/city. I loved this because not only was the town relatively big, but the town ambience just drove it so much deeper to a feeling, where it absolutely felt like it was indeed a very huge town. Now my idea was to some how get some kind of ambience placed in Oblivions major cities. My plan was to start with the Imperial City (how typical) and see how that worked out. Do you think this is a good idea? Because I mean, the IC is huge and well it's a lively city, even according to lore and such. But when I'm there, I just don't get that feeling. Sure I see a lot of NPC's and guards, but that feeling just ins't there. Of course the city isn't too alive at night and maybe theres a way to make the ambience gradually louder as it hits around noonish, and then as the sun goes down, it gets quieter and quiter and as the morning approaches it gets louder and louder...I'm talking too much. I get lots of ideas like this and once I get going I get carried away with my imagination LOL.

People underestimate sound. We absorb most of our information through our eyes, and don't think sound is that important, when it is, we just don't notice it Wink .

I certaintly know what you mean about IC. It just doesn't feel... alive... immersive...

I think good ambience is extremely important in computer games to define the setting and let you get the feel of things and stuff..

And I certainly agree that town ambience is lacking in Oblivion, allthough I think most nature ambience is pretty good.

It?d be awesome to improve the game in this aspect, I think in our mods here it?d also be nice to have unique ambience to help define and put a genuine feel to all our areas.

I plan on trying to do some ambience in the future as well, but I?ve never worked with such so I can?t guarantee anything, and obviously it?s a lot of work so - the more the merrier!! :)

I was just thinking this the other day, how weird it was that the outside world had more ambient sounds in it than the most populated city in Cyrodiil.

Are you thinking just some background chatter noise, or something else?

Chatter, kind of murmur like...
Dogs barking
Hammer on anvil
Church bells
An occasional shout
Window shutters flapping
Doors cracking
etc...

I?d imagine it?d be some testing to make non-intrusive...
