Hello everyone! I have come here in hopes of joining the Skyrim Team as
a Quest writer. I hope this is the right area! I have only been writing
quests using Word and have not been able to put them 'in-game' yet. I
had played ol' skool D&D way back in the 70's/80's and have a
little bit of knowledge on lore. I hope to be able to write quests
again as I had done before (as a DM). My first question is 'What kind
of structure do writers follow?' I mean, how do others write it on
paper first? I have a structure that I follow now, but would like to
compare it against others. My second question is 'Is there help to put
my quests 'in-game'? My third question is 'Do any form 'local' groups?
Again, I am new here and not sure where to start so if you all can help
a little and maybe point me in the right direction(s), I would
appreciate it. I can, if needed, upload a sample quest to those who
want to help and/or give me advice on my structure. I also can be
considered an 'idea' guy, well, becuase I have many for this game.
Thanks again for any help and not 'burning the noob'

Welcome, Rivotech! It's nice to have a little more maturity here (if
you were playing D&D in the 70's, you've gotta be nearing 50!)
Anyway, the quests are usually quite linear with four to eight nodes.
eg:
1) hear a rumor that Joe has a problem
2) find joe to learn that Sue is missing
3) ask around to find that Sue was captured by vampires
4) find the vampire den
5) rescue Sue and take her back to Joe
6) receive Joe and Sue's undying gratitude (and a fancy robe!)
The artistry is in how it all plays out. I think my favorite in TES4 is
the painting quest in Cheydinhall. It's straight-forward, but very
entertaining.
If you're up to playing around with some quests, let me know - I have a half-dozen to work up for Haerter's Gap.

Thank you all for the warm welcome. I currently have a 'finished' quest
that I would like to upload so I may recieve feedback and the
such...This quest has 3 'parts' to the main quest and has 8 'side'
quests, which in turn, lead to other quests I had planned on writing.
The 'quest' is not really written as a story, but more less as I would
have done in D&D...Its hard to explain
, but I do believe the 'structure' I use is very productive as it will
allow the scripter easy access to all info in the quest. So, were can I
post it? Might one of the Elders get it from me to look it over? Should
I just 'jump in' any given topic and through down my 2 cents? I dont
want to be rude or pushy. I do feel that I can contribute great amounts
to the Skyrim Project or any project for that matter. I had stated in
the previous post that I was looking for a 'local' group, by this I
mean peeps in my geological area to form a group. This way ideas can be
more easily exchanged and we could work together at one location. I
currently reside in the San Fransisco Bay Area. Well, guess I will just
'jump in' on a topic and see were it goes

Just post it up on this board, the Quest Dev board, and then the whole
team will give feedback on it. I see what you mean by local area groups
now, as far as I know we don't have any, it would probably just be as
easy to communicate over AIM or something right? If you find someone
who wants to get together thats fine, but for the record, I don't know
about this (got to be careful on the internet with people asking to
meet up
no offense meant towards you Rivo, just if there ever is some kind of a
gathering between anyone from the team and something bad happens, as
the one in charge of the place where the gathering was arranged I would
likely get in trouble for it, so I need to cover myself). |
