Quest idea: The Brave Idiot Reply to this Post Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Posts Report Post to a Moderator       Go to the top of this page

This is the starting quest for series. I will add more as I write them. My goal is to add a quest series that will depart from the normal quest routine that the majority of the quests in Oblivion seem to follow.
Keep in mind this may seem like an easy quest but it is only the initial one in this series and I hope to make the rest both innovative and fun.

The Brave Idiot
Player enters a town and after he reaches a certain level of fame he is approached by a well-dressed female NPC that says Hi to him and gives him a letter.
The letter says.
?Sorry I could not speak with you about this request but it is better we are not seen talking in public. Please go to the Inn and tell the Innkeeper that you want ?the room with a view?. He will ask you why then you must respond ?Zaisha recommended it.? That is a password that will allow you access to a secret meeting room we have at the Inn. More will be revealed to you when you arrive.?
So the player enters the Inn and goes through the password conversation with the Innkeeper who then takes the player down to the basement and opens up a secret door to a hidden room. Inside are three Nords one of whom is the one that gave player the letter, the other two are men wearing typical gear for an adventurer; one in plate armor, the other in leather. The female addresses the player.
?Greetings, news of your deeds has reached us here and given all that you have done we have decided to offer you a chance to join us. You will receive great rewards if you decide to work for us but you must accept our offer before we can tell you what we do.?
Player is given a choice.
A: ?I accept?
B: ?Blindly accept without explanation??
C: ?Sorry, I?m busy?
NPC responses
A: ?A good, now I will explain what we do.?
B: ?Yes, I?m afraid that is what we ask. I know it isn?t easy but we are a secret organization and we cannot reveal our actions to anyone not willing to be a part of our team.? Then leads back to choices A and C.
C: ?Then you must leave and not speak of this place to anyone. Should you change your mind you can find us here during the day.?
After accepting the offer the NPC goes on to explain.
?I?m truly sorry for the secrecy but it is of the utmost importance nothing we do is revealed and you will understand why.?
?I am Zaisha and I am the royal servant to Dax. These are my associates Dyne and Mose. Back to Dax, he is the son of a very important royal figure so with that title he carries a certain amount of importance to this town. He a brave would-be adventurer but he is neither wise nor skilled in combat. He often gets it in his head to go on some adventure that is way beyond his abilities and he cannot be talked down from his ideas so that is where we come in. For many years now we have set up controlled situations where we can make it seem as if Dax is partaking in a great quest when he is, unbeknownst to him, really not. So far we have been successful in this endeavor but lately Dax has wanted to go on more increasingly dangerous missions that we are having a tougher time dealing with. This is where you will help us. Luckily your first assignment will be an easy one but as times goes on I can guarantee you will have to put yourself in a decent amount of danger to help us. That aside, are you ready for your first mission??

Player choice
A: ?Yes?
B: ?No?
NPC response
B: ?Please come back when you are ready, we will be waiting for your return.?
A: ?Good, let us get started then. Dax has somehow gotten the idea that there is a great treasure in this Inn, or rather, under it. We know that he will tear this place apart if he has to just to find it so rather than let that happen we need you to plant a treasure. This will ensure that the Inn takes minimal damage and that Dax finally puts his latest quest to an end.?
Player is given a small box.
?Inside this box we have put a few jewels we bought at a market. Mose loosed a few floorboards in the next room so that the box may be planted under them. We simply want you to place the box under the floorboards and then go about your business as normal. Come back to us in one days time and we will have your reward for you.?
Player response.
?That?s it??
Zaisha
?Yes, I told you this would be a simple task. Surely you must realize this is not beyond our abilities to do but consider this your chance to prove yourself to us. Should you run off with the box we will consider you a traitor and you will become a wanted man in this town but if you do as you are told you will be rewarded and we will move onto the next assignment. The outcome is up to you: a bounty on your head worth more than the jewels in that box or a reward with opportunity for advancement.?
?Till we meet again.?
Player can then leave and either put the box under the loose floorboards of the Inn basement or simply steal them and become a criminal.

I like it. It's different, creative, unlike most of the misc quests in Oblivion. This guy Dax reminds me a bit of the son of the count of Cheydinhal (that was a weird sentence... sorry I just can't remember his name). I suggest making the quest more challenging by making the basement of the Inn a restricted area, so if caught you will be considered a trespasser.

Anyway good job, hope to see more of your stuff soon. Good job!

Very nice. I hope to see more! Just remember not to get carried away on the dialogue. That could get tedious for the Player, even if we can get some quality voice actors.

Yeah I can always cut dialogue if needed. I will try to be mindful of that for pacing purposes in the future. Anyhow here is the second quest in the series.
--------------------------------
Second quest. Player approaches the secret room in the Inn to talk to Zaisha again.
Zaisha: ?Greetings again though I regret to say we haven?t much time for talk. A man traveling out in the wilderness for alchemy ingredients was attacked by a were-wolf. Luckily he was found and cured of his lycanthrope in time but unfortunately this event inspired Dax to go on another one of his quests.?
Player: ?Dare I ask??
Zaisha: ?Judging from your tone you have probably guessed what I?m about to say. Dax wishes to kill a were-wolf. Normally this would be a dangerous hunt but fear not, Dyne is an expert at tracking and hunting wildlife. With his help we were able to find a spot where a were-wolf seems to frequent. It seems the creature is feeding on some frost berries in the area. We set a trap in the area to catch it so we can lead Dax to it and he can kill it without hurting himself in the process. Dyne will accompany you to the spot where you will set the beast free.?
Player: ?Set it free??
Zaisha: ?Relax, we have a means to keep the beast subdued while maintaining its freedom of movement. We must, of course, make this seem real enough to fool Dax.?
Player: ?So what do I need to do??
Zaisha: ?Talk to Dyne. He will fill in the rest of the details. He is just outside town waiting for you.?
Player leaves the Inn and the town and finds Dyne.
Dyne: ?So, are you ready to set out??
Player choice of response.
A: ?No.?
B: ?Yes.?
Dyne Response.
A: ?Please make your preparations and return quickly. We do not have much time.?
B: ?Good, now here is the rest of our plan. When we reach the trapped creature you will shoot it with an arrow I will provide. I am having you do this because I will be the one who releases the trap to free the creature. Though both are dangerous tasks I do not wish to endanger your life should something go wrong with the trap. Do not worry for my safety, I am well practiced in dealing with wild animals. We will travel on foot to the spot where the were-wolf is trapped and when we are close I will tell you so you can ready your bow. The arrow is a special type that can only be used once. The head of the arrow completely pierces the skin of the target, breaks from the shaft, and enters the body allowing for maximum effect of poisons applied to it. The shaft will simply fall to the ground and remain hidden in the brush so that when Dax and Zaisha approach it will seem as if nothing has tampered with the were-wolf. They will be not far behind us so we must act quickly but I will not release the creature until after you have shot it. This will make your job much easier rather than try to shoot a moving target. You will only have one shot so it is imperative you do not miss.?
?With that said, let us head out.?
Player is given the poison arrow and travel into the woods with Dyne. Once they reach a certain spot Dyne will talk to the player.
Dyne: ?We are here but? this can?t be right.?
Player: ?What??
Dyne: ?The trap has been sprung but there is nothing here.?
Then Dyne and the player are suddenly attacked by three were-wolves.
Dyne: ?I will lead two of the were-wolves away, shoot the last one with the poison arrow and then come find me so that we may kill the other two.?
Dyne then runs off with two of the wolves behind him. Player must shoot the last were-wolf with the poison arrow which instantly makes it docile so it will not follow the player. Player then must run off and find Dyne who has taken shelter in a nearby cave. When player enters the cave there is a dead were-wolf but no sign of Dyne so player is prompted to explore the cave deeper. The cave is populated with were-wolves. Player finally finds Dyne in a room towards the end of the cave.
Dyne: ?I believe we have made a grave mistake. It was not one wolf feeding on the frost berries not far from here but many. This cave is a den for these beasts and I fear that Zaisha and Dax will be in grave danger if we do not act quickly.?
Player: ?What can we possibly do??
Dyne: ?You may not have noticed but once I entered this room no were-wolves dared to follow me. I quickly noticed that there is a large amount of canis root growing here. Quickly gather some and we will run out to the frost berry grove to smear it on the trees around the area. Hopefully that will keep the wolves at bay.?
Player picks up three canis roots and then leaves the cave with Dyne. Then travel back to the grove to see the poisoned were-wolf still there but no others around. Three trees are marked on the quest map to rub the canis root on. After this is done Dyne and the player simply wait in the bushes outside the grove and watch as Dax and Zaisha approach, kill the wolf, and then leave.
Dyne then leaves the player saying ?I?ll see you back in town, your reward is waiting.?
Player makes it back to town and meets with Zaisha in the usual spot.
Zaisha: ?So I hear you had a few problems with this set up??
Player: ?That is an understatement.?
Zaisha: ?Well at least it all worked out and you and Dyne were unharmed. Here is your reward, I hope you consider it equal compensation for your troubles.?
Player receives a gold reward- amount to be set later.

Nice, but whoever puts this into a quest should "dummy down" the language. Think maybe 8th grade education or less.

Nah... no need to patronize the player.

Very nice quest, though make sure that the werewolfs are a stray pack and aren't followers of Hircine as if the PC was in the middle of the HH questline it would seem wierd killing some of your own "Brothers".

very nice, keep up the good work! :D

just a suggestion, but I think it would be fun if Dax finds out about the setup-thing in the end of the quest-line :)

Unfortunately Trees_Are_The_Devil has been gone for a long time and this little quest line of his has remained unfinished. If someone feels they can write a couple more quests to compliment the current ones please do. Make sure to read the current quests thoroughly first. Also any follow-up quests should have the same "vibe" as the original two.
