Nordic Longboat Reply to this Post Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Posts Report Post to a Moderator       Go to the top of this page

Well it lasted about a day in the concept stage. I couldn't resist a quick pop at modelling it. It's very much a WIP. I've already worked it since the photo. I will not update another untill there are some nice details to show off such as oar holes and a mast ect.

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c85/lego-botz/longboat.gif

How the hell do you UV something this big? are the textures on large objects on 2048x2048? I want to get all the curves in the wood in the texture, and some lovely norse runes carving work like in the original museum piece.

I'm loving it! I do however suggest at one end you make it look more like a head, as the other end reminds me of a tail :D or you could make ttwo, one like that and one with a head(A dragon or monster would look good).

Also I suggest that when you come to make a sail that you make it a seperate model, so we can also make plain row boats from it, also if your going to put shields on the side then make those a seperate model for more customisation.

Good job!

Oh yeah all that. Why would I try to extrude a big cylinder shape out the middle of my boat when I can just make a cylinder and sit it exactly where I want.

I was planning on actually using the same shield model as the one psychotic did a load of textures for.

I have been thinking of a dragon head totem on the front....But this perticular ship is gonna look like this http://www.westbourne-model.co.uk/model-...8%20oseberg.jpg
Making a dragon head after this one is completed to make a quick variation wouldn't be impossible. I found this: http://www.insinga.com/merle/oseburg_lion_40.jpg
http://www.georgetown.edu/departments/medieval/oseberg.jpg

If anyone finds something cooler please post it up. I like the above pic....but I think we can do better.

for a smaller row boat. the same model could be used, but I'd remove the curled ends and make them end much more simply. Acutally I think I'd model a completely differnt model for this.

Heres a dragon heads you might be interested in:

Dragon 1

Alternatively, what if you could do something from Nord Lore? Some ancient/mythical creature? Well, ill start looking something up, and see if I can get a picture or two for ya.

Edit: Instead of that, perhaps the decoration on the front of the boats mights be locally inspired. A raven for Riften, a wolf for Whitehold. That sort of thing. Or even textures over the sale with the insignia of each clan. Just a few ideas :)

The second dragon would fit better imo. Yes And for the sails we will most certainly make a few variations for every hold with a navy. Good job!

yep yep.

I am just working on the boat right now. just tweeking the base. And making a few rope stations for the sail rigging. I think 2 sets of sails. One open an the other at dock is in order.

I do have a question for any modellers . I'm going to make oar holes. I want to use a boolean operand. I've done them before. I just want to nkow wether its ok to do these on models for tes4. I only ask it because of how it works.

basicly its createing a cylinder and lying it across the deck of the boat to subtract a circular geometery where oar holes would be.

anyone know? or ask around for me. I guess it works but I want a confirmation.

while looking for a pic of a viking anchor...I found this site....with a nice little pen and ink of some rigging that I'll be emulating for my boat. Lots of resource here. http://www.regia.org/listings.htm

You read my mind. Good job!

Sorry, no idea about your modeling question. Maybe you could PM someone like Zarf or Heywood for a faster response.

ah ha. a good shot of various bits and peices for the ship. I have ammassed a large collection of images and research for the Oseberg ship- which is what mine is based on. its not ezact. but I tried :) . I think I have the knowledge to go in and comlete the model relatively brain spazzum free :) .....cept for the boolean thing. I guess I'll see if Zarf and Heywood know.

Boat rigging is EVIL. I hate it.

Also.....you know those shields that adore the out side of the boat....well I done a bunch of retextes(well I had to change the UV first :) they are at 1024x1024 right now...which'll be too much for like 30 shields sitting on the side of my boat Tongue , I think they'll be alright at 512x512...still thats a lot of poke). then I thought...thats not like me. So I medled with the mesh a bit to make them more authentic. See the metal dome in the center of the shield? well I made it smaller in the new versions I'm working on, closer to what I have been looking at in my referance pics. So I'll go texture more of that version of it later. Glad I did that, the dome thing being as big as it was really was annoying me Yes

There 4 other designs I want to try.

oh and I made a quick anchor too. it needs a few minutes modelling...which I'll do right before I UV it. It'll be a piece of cake to texture.
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c85/lego-botz/anchor.gif

Oh and a random claymore I did because someone had me looking at a picture of one similar...I'm like that you know. I'll be looking at something and wondering how I'll extrude it or spline it :)
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c85/lego-botz/claymore2.gif

And some twin hook swords I made for no reason at all. and has nothing to do with my boat or skyrim lol - I'm just showing off.

Oh and I made that teardrop shape kite shield.... when I put some textures on it I'll show yall

Man you're good! Rocking Banana Yes

I like the shields they look very much like the real thing. I made some textures for the shields the Skyrim guards will carry, they fit the shape of your shields closely. If you want I can send you those textures (there are about 10) and you can use them for the shields on the side of the boat.

That claymore is a genuine Scottish claymore form the 1600's if I'm not mistaken. Highlanders are sort of like Nords, can we use that sword? :D

The hook swords look very exotic, perhaps something you would find on Akavir.

excellent as always.

Although, One question Psychotic. Aren't those shields meant for the different cities? So each one has its own shield? Mind you I suppose that could look quite cool if different cities have their own longboats :D

Yes they are, for a moment there I had a false image of a united Skyrim navy in my head. :D

We'll do a few re-textures of the sails and shields once the basic model is done. Yes The coastal Holds might very well have their own personalized long boats.

What should I do with the claymore? It can't just be another genaric weapon can it. Special soldiers or some banit leaders sword I think. equivalent to say dwarven maybe. But whats the texture idea..I want a little bit of engraving on theblade. but thats as far as I got. Anything special it could be made of. I don't feel its ebony or anything. maybe an ebony inlay on it perhaps.....shoot me some ideas.

the shields are made purposely for the boat. Its just for the looks you know :D
and the look I wanted, calls for a lot of shields

also I figured out a good way to do all the sail rigging.

Looked through most of the pictures and the longboat looks awesome!!! Good job!

To me silver feels very nordish (silver plating/sputtered, steel underneeth) , very high quality silver offcourse and great craftmanship and an ebony inlay like you said maybe...?

How about some special alloy? Maybe primarily silver for magical properties combined with ebony for durability?

Can someone do some ingame testing for me? Its an easy job really. 10mins

I require someone to set the texture paths of a nif though. and set up the shield in the CS and see if this nif is working. I would do it myself but...I don't have Ob installed and it won't run on poor ol' crashy here.....

it looks like this shield nif is correct,*please work please work*
apart from setting up the texture path.
I just want to know wether I did everything right. the only thing I was unsure of was after I removed the old mesh branch..i was wonderin if I should set the children back to 1 and update array again. It was not being used so I figured I could just remove it. I left it. I asked about this on the tes forums and thought I just mention it here in case anyone knows. EDIT: Nvmind it updated itself somewhere along the line :)

Thnks

linky for shield nif and tex

I didn't take a pic of the back but the wood is way to bright, like freshly cut wood. Just needs to be darkened, I suggest using the burn tool not just generally darkening it.

Hmmm. I think the wood I used in that one is touch greyed like old wood, It shouldn't be too bright...I was using a couple diff wood texs to give a varity to the shields. Does Ob tend to make things look lighter than how you texture? It's not a major problem to darken the wood. I do really need to see all this stuff in game so I can see what needs what. I'll 'borrow' a pc later and test a out my texs myself.

any custom collision mesh tutorials floating about?

Only is the lighting is strong, but the brightness might be due to the secular maps.

When you click on the pallet icon that's next to every "NiMaterialProperty" node in NifScope a window will open and the first slider in it adjusts the glossiness (secularity).

Claymore test texture. Any good? I think I may fixorate a bit of funky alignment and finish the untexted bits and just have it done as it stands basicly. It just works. :)

Does anyone know anything about how sheaths work?

Very nice. Good job!

Perhaps you could add some leather to grip?

Ooooo... cool! Yes

As Arbiter suggested some leather for the grip would be nice.

I have a leather texture somewhere. I dunno if it'll look better if I use it though. I think some kinda leather wrapping rather than just leather wrapped might be cool if you know what I mean. Dunno if I have a texture for that.......*googles* :D

I quite like the wood myself. I was thinking of maybe a little bit of scrolling engraved in the wood. but meh

Honestly I don't want to spend forever on this. I didn't even meant to make it in the first place.

Leather wrapping is what I meant. Yes You might recycle such a texture from the texture for the steel bow in OB.

I'll have a look at that..edit: nah don't like it. Meanwhile I found this site. I think there might be a suitable texture there...check the ones called fantasy and nuweave... if not I'm gonna save most of them for future use :)
