I'll note that the handle of the real world sword IS made from wood and
has no wrappings around it usually (I have a picture of it in a book
).

Of course. only noodle armed choir boy needs a leather wrap to help him hold onto his mighty claymore.
Edit 2006.11.10 18:22:
anyone fancy taking a stab at putting that claymore in game for me? I
think I did it right again. Also you need to set the texture path in
nifscope. *please work please work*
edit: I fiddled with the texture so it looks nearly finished.... I left
the handle wood.....I made a mess of the leather.....well I got it in
game
and it works too! looks pretty sweet. I can see people wanting to use it.

Why don't you post some screen shots psychotic. fiddle with the gloss slider and spec levels before you put it in game.
that aside.....ship is coming along. I need to do a couple essentials
and put it all together. It wasn't straight a forward model.
deffinately challenging.
Also I made a barrel, a bucket, an anchor, a pile of ropes. a small
hammer, an oar, and a bow saw. Bucket and barrel are in texturing. I
plan on making a wooden chest.

Ah.
Did you tweek the spec & gloss settings? they aren't totally wrong
but could use a look. the only thing I have ingame that look pretty
close to how I want are the round shields that I tested. mind you they
should all be cool co its essentually the same 2 meshes for all of
them... do you want to take em now?

I revisited this. actually the base mesh/shape is really good for how
noob I was when I did it. I put a lot of care into its acuracy
so now I fixed and UVed it, found my starting point on the textures, I might beable to get close to export soon.
I have 90% of the UV mapping and mesh editing out of the way. the only
real job left is painting the final textures. the base wood image is a
tiling 3000x2000. as you notice it'll need to be totally reworked to be
2048x1024. If my PC can't handle painting that size res textures, it
maybe months, many months if ever to afford an upgrade to my pc. I do a
a 2ghz 1gb ram sitting here with no Psu, it'll handle that res, so
maybe I'll get that up and running if this one can't take the heat.
with some good textures finished then I can finalise the UVs, split it
up according to textures, through a load of boxes about for collision,
then export it.
My ships poly count is fine imo. more than doubles with all the shields
though, at 900tri each, and like 30 odd of them you see what I mean.
shouldn't be too bad.
don't have a final count, but its going to be 55-60k tri somewhere mark

I have no reservations saying if I abanded a project or model. Theres
no shame just letting something go and being straight about not having
the motivation or time to finish it. This is my longship though.
did the base plank texture and paralax. just some more texturers,
fitting the UVs, and final tweaking now. thursday I'll try to get more
work done on it.

If the model is in nif format and has been UV mapped I'm quite willing
to handle the textures. I gather this thing is almost finished and it'd
be a shame if it was forgotten about so close to the finish line. Shall
I contact Ghogiel?

It appears for some things SAcarrow is further along Ghogiels Models thread
But I'll see if Ghogiel could post up anything he doesn't recall handing to SAcarrow.

Ghogiel believes SAcarrow has the most up-to-date files for this, if anyone's after them.

The hold-up on the longboat was the shield textures; well, before the computer crash.
I PMed Ghogiel about those, but as I recollect, he had no recollection. I'll see what I can do.

Those shield textures should all exist in the current master, they're
just on equippable shields. You might have to change some filepaths
around, but there should certainly be useable shields in there. |

Yeah textures are no prob at all, as long as the UVs are okay then I don't care if the thing's totally textureless lol.

I don't think we have them, we should really get hold of them though.
What if we set up a sail script for the longship? It rides fairly
shallow in the water, so it would easily be capable of navigating our
rivers and streams. |

I stumbled over Ghogiel's shield texes somewhere on this forum; that (and a request from Richard)
finally got me to fully generate the NIF. The textures as I have them stored (1SK\longboat) are here on FF. Some notes:- I couldn't find his sail fabric texture so I subbed one from vanilla OB that is clearly wrong.
- There are some inverted normals on the sail bundle. I tried to
unify in NifSkope; no joy. Attempts to re-import into Max, individually
flip and re-export just the sail screwed with the UV.
- The textures are great, but some of them are huge! I have no idea how performance might be affected.
- The model itself is 3M in size; good thing I'm Silgrad Core.
