Since it seems that (like myself) other people enjoy non-guild ways of
making money, I was thinking what would be a good way of doing this. I
then thought of a housing mod from Morrowind that, as one option,
allowed the player to buy a tavern outside of Gnisis.
Well, why not allow the player to buy a tavern or mead hall. For the
tavern, perhaps the player would talk to the lord of a county and buy a
deed for the land to build a tavern on (either in town or on a road in
the county). The player could then choose the style depending on how
much money they wish to invest (could be a cheaper tavern like Olav's
or a more expensive one like Jerall View). Once this is done the tavern
works both as a home and source of income.
However, there would then be sidequests, such as:
a) Finding a cook
b) figuring out a superior mead brew (increasing your income)
c) [rough idea] establishing a secret betting area in a basement room for rat fights (increasing profits again)
d) hiring a bouncer (if your tavern is a higher quality one)
As all this happens your tavern becomes more and more popular and more
people become regulars as each section is completed until you become a
popular destination like Olav's. Once again, you will get more $ for
such a thing [I am no expert on AI travel packages, so correct me if
this isn't possible]. Maybe also some of the regulars that come in
(especially if your tavern is outside town) will be mercenaries that
you can hire and/or NPC's that offer new quests.
Obviously a tavern in town would make more money but if you choose to
build one on a road in the wilderness, then it would be more a base for
people staying the night etc. Maybe have a quest to allow it to act as
a thieves' guild base...or maybe for assassins, etc.
For the mead hall, similar ideas except that you would be way out in
the wilderness and act as a home for hunters and so on. Thus, it would
look more like Thirsk. The player would still make money and have
quests to get good mead/more hunters but it would act more as a place
for the really rustic character to call home.

Great idea, only one one-word-question to ask:
How?

Hehe, I leave that to the modders
...I am only trying to throw some ideas out there that perhaps the team
might decide to try and use. No doubt this one would take a bit of work
to pull off.

It could be like buying a house, and the hiring a cook and a bouncer
would be like hiring the maid at the Skingrad house. and for the
building of it, I'm not sure how, but I have seen some mods that allow
you to chose how the building will be built.

It could be integrated with the become a Chieftain-of-a-village-idea I proposed.

Yep, excellent.
This is not that hard to pull off as it might seam, and the
possibilities are endless, you can upgrade the tavern/mead hall in so
many ways.
Once the basic scripts are made it won't be hard to make more than one
ownable tavern, you could own a whole chain of taverns and start a big
corporation... like Starbucks.

hehe.. Yeah it?d be pretty cool to run your own tavern!!
I think a lot of care should be taken so as to balance it right so that
it does?nt just become an infinate source of money.. It should require
some management, and poor management should lead to even loosing money
I think...
But the ideas about upgrading the place with better mead, the ratfight
thing etc to make it more interesting certainly touch the subject of
management..
