I've heard people talking about the Wars between the Redoran and the
Nords while playing Oblivion. Maybe we could make a few quests on this
topic? In Eastern Skyrim of course. Maybe an entire faction
representing the Nordic culture's anger at the Dunmer. Maybe the end
quest could be a large skirmish of sorts? Nords against Dark Elves on a
snow plain? (Don't know if that's possible)
I don't know... Just throwing around ideas at the moment, but I'd have quite a lot of fun with a faction like this.

You should co?rdinate this with Vvardenvell mod
It would indeed be a cool idea. As far for you're big final battle. I
wouldn't recommend it. the OB engine isn't designed for a lot of units
on your screen at the same time.

Damn it all to hell!!!
How many would you think is the max amount of units that could be fighting at the same time?

Over 8-10 and you'll notice lag, wars are (nearly) immposible to implement in the OB engine.

We could imply a movie though

You can make movies? That'd be pretty cool... Having a battle... And
then skipping to you, the warrior for the Nords... Fighting the Redoran
commander or something... Maybe the Redoran commander kills the Nord
commander? Which would then make you chieftan when you kill the Dunmer?

Yeah, maybe we should just insert a few quick shots of "Medieval2: Total War" in that movie... no one will know.
One of the Solstheim quest lines will deal with the Redoran conflict
(all coordinated with Vv of course), but it will probably contain
covert ops kind of missions (as Arbiter said) rather then big
battles... a few small skirmishes are possible though.

depends on area really but at 8-10 you got lag for sure... wish Oblivion had a more NWN2 like engine...

You could make a new worldspace specifically for the quest battlefield.
You make a snowy field with Pale Pass weather. The weather will make it
foggy after a certain distance so you won't need distant mountains or
trees which will increase lag. Besides when you're on the battlefield
you won't be looking around for some distant scenery. The player can be
teleported in for the battle and teleported out after the battle.
I was curious so I tested it and have 24 total npcs fighting. I didn't
receive any lag during the battle. I raised it to about 30 and only
received lag when pretty much all 30 npcs were swarmed around me. In a
scripted battle they wouldn't be that bunched up.
I think a battle done like this would work with some scripting so they fight more individually.

If the end war does work out I'll try starting a quest line... I have
two quest-lines at the moment and a finished quest waiting to be
approved. But I'd absolutely love to "lay some smack down" on the Dark
Elf bastards.
(They were always so rude to me...)

I think the best thing for this would be to work it into the Mainquest,
also what we could do is set more than half of the Npcs to people, it
might require a little work and adjustment, however the end resut would
be higher frame rate

Ahh... thought so.
That would indeed require some work.
There are a few script functions that are used when you have too many
NPCs in one place in order to reduce the FPS hit. The functions make
the NPCs more... stupid (therefore reducing the amount of information
that needs to be processed).
The problem is that it works only in interiors (though I could be very wrong) and makes the NPCs a bit too stupid.
Check here for more info.

I'm not sure, but isn't making a final battle HUGE going to mess with
lore a little bit. if all of a sudden we have a huge conflict like the
war resolved, then that could take a lot of explaining. I think that
maybe something with YOUR group of Nords being victorious would be cool.
I don't know all the details, but I'm just raising the question.

There won't be a huge final battle (well there will be a battle, but it wont be huge
). And even if the final battle does have a big effect on events it
will be no different than the Skyrim main quest which unavoidably has a
big effect on things.
Beth has established lore on there being a conflict between the Nords
and the Redoran, but nothing further. Any further lore on the subject
will have to come in an expansion or a new TES game, so until that
happens we have no choice but to decide what happens in the conflict
ourselves.
