Can I use Maya for modelling for Oblivion? Reply to this Post Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Posts Report Post to a Moderator       Go to the top of this page

I notice everyone modelling for Oblivion uses either Max or Blender; my training uses Maya (I modelled a Star Destroyer on my first day lol). Is there any reason for not using Maya? Exporters or something??

I'm not a modeler myself but I think it's Blender's free so lotsa people use it and Max is very powerful i.e. those who can afford it use it.

I think Maya's fine. You just have to find a way to convert models into .nifs (once again, not sure how easy that is in Blender or Max.)

I am pretty sure I saw that they could be (when I dabbled with modelling to make Solstheim weapons). Though, like Blender, I think a plugin is required for it to do so. Sorry for the lack of finality, but my answer is....yes(?)

http://niftools.sourceforge.net/wiki/Maya

You may need to play around in nifscope to do collision meshes and whatnot.

I've learnt how to UV map now, and to texture. So I'll have a go at modelling a...what's something simple that we need? Don't know how to put collision or havok on it either though but I guess I could learn (nifscope is not exactly something they cover in my course lol)

Hmmm, a winged helmet, or something simpler like a new shield model? Maybe a new set of cups and flagons? New Barrels?

I think we have enough shields as it is. Winged helmet might be a bit over my head. People tend to overlook the mundane things, which subconciously are what give a game some of it's atmosphere. Little things. That's why of all the things in Ghogiel's thread, I was most impressed by the longship (alright that's not little but it's an 'atmosphere' thing) and the stuff like bow-saws and the horn.

As for cups and flagons, they could be achieved easily enough by retextures, which I think I may do anyway actually, but that's for another thread. I think I'll attempt to model some jars and jugs with stoppers of various description.
