Map of Eastern Skyrim Reply to this Post Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Posts Report Post to a Moderator       Go to the top of this page

I made a map of Eastern Skyrim. It matches the heightmap pretty damn well, so I was thinking we could use it as an ingame map. Obviously it needs roads and towns, plus the font is wrong.

the blending is really wierd in places, and me thinks the area around the rivers needs to have more definition

Blending together aerial photographs of the Himalayas to make Skyrim's mountains is easier said than done I'm afraid. Nevertheless, I'll try to imrove it as best I can.

Fixing the Rivers should be easy enough.

I'm more refering to areas where the plains (fairly flat tan areas) meet the mountain pictures. it looks like you just went in with a blend tool on that layer, what I would do is get a party opaque eraser to merge it slightly more realisticaly. as for the rivers, take a burn tool to them for more darkenss and variation

Why don't you just take a pic of your heightmap from above and work with that?

That's exactly what I did. I used ariel photos of mountains and ridges in the Himalayas which matched the shape of the heightmaps mountain ranges, and then overlayed them on top of the heightmap image.

What about using your heightmap to make the map instead of using aerial photos? I did a map for my skyrim mod using a pic of my heightmap it came out quite well: LINK

I could have done - except my heightmap sucks, and I was trying to go for a stylized look which fitted better with Bethesda's default ingame map.

Well if you want to make it look like Bethesda's map your best method would be to use the actual bethesda map and just use the clone brush like what Noirgrim did for his highrock and hammerfell maps.

I started redoing it, hopefully it looks more like Beth's map now.

Here's what I've done so far:

Minor quibble: the rivers look a little broad and placid; also they tend to get narrower as you go upstreams.

Other than that, it looks great! I especially like your mountain treatments. :)

I finally found the font I was looking for.

Now all I need to do is figure out how to draw the cities.
