I know that there's no lore supporting this , but I don't recall any
lore denying it either , so my question is : is there NO
chance of there being nordic dwarves in the mountains of skyrim? since
from somewhere the term 'dwarf' was given to the dwemer , I assume
there is a source for the word , and they might be nords , that have
changed in the mountain shafts , have eventually grown smaller in size
, and everything. so , i'd just like to hear the reception to this idea

Thats an interesting theory
I don't know of any lore regarding this, but it is true that Dwemer
were called Dwarves, which makes no sense since they do not appear to
be any shorter than other Elves
It is said in lore that its possible the name Dwarf was given to them by the giants which lived on the Morrowind province.
Its also saif tha the name Dwemer simply means "Deep Folk" which is
either akin to their "thinking" or "deep thought" (I suppose cause they
were into science) or it could have been akin to thier living
underground
Thier is lore I suppose which could support both theories
Short Nords, thats interesting I suppose any race can have a short group, height is not a "law"
Enjoy

Thanks for the reply
I think that one thing that might support the nordic dwarves is that
nearly all races and beasts from nordic mythology are included - all
kinds of elves , giants , trolls. Only the nordic dwarves and lindworms
are missing , and I believe that both might be rather interesting.

It's a fair idea, but I think something as significant as a new race
would be pushing the boundaries a bit too far. Traditional
Tolkien-esque dwarves would also make TES (even our unofficial
interpretation) less differentiated from the plethora of generic
fantasy universes out there, which is something I'd personally want to
avoid. Also, Skyrim already has its own 'lost race' in the Falmer. Plus
we it would be another architecture style to create =(
