Pagran Village Reply to this Post Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Posts Report Post to a Moderator       Go to the top of this page

Some of you may noticed I placed down a few buildings to mark the spot of Pagran village a while back. I started work on it again tonight, and I already have some pretty screenshots to show, obviously it's still very much a WIP.

I may have some more screenies tommorow - or not, if I decide to model something...

Yes, unless it's in The Pale... I can't remember which exactly, but it is the only village outside the Rift or Eastmarch.

Did I mention screenshots in that post above? looks like I forgot about that. Anyway I now have all the interiors complete. Now I just have to create all the NPCs, AI and dialogue...

Update! NPC's and pathgrids plus a few AI schedules are now implemented, and here's a completely irrelevant picture of Skyrim.

It would be nice if Oblivion displayed speedtree billboards at a slightly greater distance so they don't just abrubtly disappear like in the screen above.

Sweet, how many quads is it?

Also I'd like to attempt to script a quest for the town sometime in the near future. The basic idea is that the Chieftain's daughters have been abducted and taken to the Pillaged Barrow by Bandits. The player must then go into the mine, spring them free, and escort them back to town. The Barrow and girls are already placed. It's a pretty simple quest, but I've never scripted before, so I imagine it will be a fairly steep learning curve.

Everything in that screen would most likely fit comfortably in a single quad.

Edit: Oblivion scripting isn't really that difficult to pick up, a quest like that would likely be an ideal first quest. Quests are not entirely scripting either, the quest window allows you to do quite a lot without any serious scripting effort.

There's a nifty little open source application called hugin that automatically takes a series of images and stitches them together into a panorama for you. All you have to do is specify the FOV for the shots (75) and it does the rest. You can get it here:
http://hugin.sourceforge.net/

As for progress, I now have AI routines for all the NPC's in the village. All that's left to do is dialogue, which I should be able to do in the next two days. If anyone has any cool ideas for stuff the villagers could talk about please say so!

I think it would be cool if some of the NPCs just gossiped. They don't necessarily give you anything relevant about quests in their gossip, but they do mention who is sleeping with who, how they think some young Nord chickened out from his right of passage test to kill a draugr, or about how they hate paying taxes to the big bad empire.

Stuff like that helps to bring out the life in individuals and give some more depth to areas besides just what the player can see and do.

Well currently the NPC's all gossip about Cyrodiil which is quite strange for a bunch of Skyrim villagers. :) We'll certainly need to replace the default rumors with ones that actually make sense, and all of those suggestions are good.

I think killing a draugr is a Skaal specific thing, in Skyrim I think they have to hunt Ice Wraiths as a rite of passage. Still a good idea for a rumor though, and it could even be turned into a quest with a little bit of thought.

maybe some rumours about the baronkings , bolvyn venim style ?
or something that's either associated with atmora or the excavations at the ruins of Saarthal?

Some screenshots of the actual village and its inhabitants

I saw a mudcrab the other day...

The pit!

The NPCs all have a rather low opinion of the local shaman's potions.

There is some vertex shading... did you miss the blood? =) The exterior does indeed need some touching up though.

I always thought ferns worked well in Skyrim, afterall you normally find them in places too extreme for flowing plants - whether that's too hot or too cold. You can find ferns in the Scottish highlands (they are so common there that they have had extermination programs to get rid of them). That is probably fairly similar to this part of Skyrim climate-wise. Not all ferns are tropical. Wink

It looks very good Alasdair.

When it comes time to create the Skyrim Crime Quest, it'll probably be necessary to set guards up to attack the player if they try fleeing the Pit, since so far all of our's are open and accessible without load doors.

Thanks! What I did for the pit is a set of initially disabled collision boxes, and I placed a large disabled fire at the top of the steps to block them off. When the player has to fight they all get turned on, and the player can't escape... It's not as crazy as it sounds. We will need to use collision boxes anyway to stop high acrobatics players simply jumping out.

Maybe getting the guards to attack is a better idea... IDK.

I also think I'll need to implement a holding cell, but I don't want to add any more houses so I think I'll put it in a small cave, unless anyone has any better ideas.

A cave would work fine I think, or else you could scale the smallest house down to a shed size.

Look good, Al. The only thing I can think is that it needs more statues Tongue Something as a focal point for the village anyway :)

cool, learned something today :D

hah, I did miss the blood, but it wasn't really what I was talking about. I was referring to a medium gray around large statics to stimulate shadows.
