So, lets do some brainstorming for Senaria's factions. I'm thinking
having around 6 is a good ammount. These factions will be like
Morrowind's where they don't follow so much story, and more or less
just give you random jobs. Also, you can't be a part of two factions
that hate eachother, so that means you can't be a Paladin and
Necromancer at the same time.
Personally I would like to have an order of paladins. They have castles
scattered around the land, with huge spires the claw at the sky. When
you reach a higher rank in the order, you get a pegasus to ride (yes,
it will fly). Quests center around chasing down bad guys, slaying
massively overgrown monsters, saving damsels in distress, ect. As a
reward for progressing in rank, you gain new, sweet looking Paladin
suits of armor. Perhaps you start out like an apprentice, and when you
become a really high rank you get an apprentice of your own?
The other thing that would be sweet is a tournament faction. Its
largley arena/gladiator battles, but not always. Sometimes there could
be horse races, obstacle courses, or labyrinths. There could be
tournaments in each town, each a little different from the one in the
next town, that are only held at certain times, and you have to
complete the lesser tournaments to advance to the the higher ranked
tournaments.
Lastly, people seem really interested in a Necromancer faction. The
Raptor Men are into human sacrifices, I think that we could tie necros
in with them somehow. If we don't have the Raptor Men burn the
sacrifices, but rather just burry them in some kind of tomb, then
perhaps necros could sneak into there and sneal the bodies. At the same
time, maybe the necros are supplying the Raptor Men with the slaves
that get sacrificed? I need some ideas though on neat perks for the
necros and how to make them unique.
Other ideas:
-Pirates
-Highwaymen
-Mafia
-Chivalrous Order (i.e. knights not about being good guys, but about wealth and noble birth; serve a King)
-Legion/Military/Army faction
-Druids
-A Joinable Tribe
-Mercenaries (real mercs, not fighters guild sissys)
-Secret Service (spies/government assasins)
-An Explorer's Guild
-A Temple/Church type faction
-Terrorist Faction
-Rangers
-Merchant Faction (negotiate deals, sail your ship with its goods from one port to the next, open new businesses in new cities)
-Vigilante Group (could think they are like medieval super-heroes)
Personally I see a ton of potential with the merchant idea, and I think I know how to make it work.

Yes indeed, I'd love to see jousting. Hmm, the only thing is if we go
with a Chivalrous Order, is that it kind of steps on the toes of both a
Tournament Faction and the Paladin Faction, but I'm not ruling anything
out. |

Enslaving faction... yes its evil but...
say Raptor men need some extra sacrifice... or elves don't have enough
laboroer for a massive building project... or one human group simply
wants to capture and enslave several of another group's

I sense a demonic necromancer cultist assassin slave trading mafia comming here
About the elves though, they've totally severed connection with the
outside world, and now hide away in their forests. So they wouldn't
purchase slaves, plus their architecture is magically "grown". |

Split the elven discussion into a new thread, as it warrants its own.

good decision...
also another idea for factions...
what about an alchemist faction? the main goal is to find a cure for a
strange sickness someone important has and so the royal folks organized
a large guild just to find the cure, and you must rise through the
ranks and get better and better at it and use your alchemy to also
defend yourself (maybe other alchemists are your rivals and want to
cure the sick person first and get the rewards) and at the end you find
out the head of the alchemy guild made to cure the ailing person is
actually poisoning the guy and had this all organized so the he could
use the competition to weed out weaker alchemists, then take loyal
alchemists and then kill all the talented ones that he didn't like and
then monopolize the medicinal trade.... |

yeah I know...
"NO, I don't love my own idea... I don't have any ego problems...."
well I just tried to put in a less used skill of TES into importance
thats all.... I mean most guys wanna shoot fire, or be stealthy or have
a big sword.... most don't wanna be nerdy and making potions and be a
doctor.... hahaha, but doctors are tough in this guild... or they die!

And don't forget the original goal of any alchemist... turning base
metals into gold! There could be a hidden questline (only available
after a certain rank or from a certain person) that would lead you to
finding the recipe for turning lead (or other common metal) into gold
(coins?). Perhaps a further questline would see rivals trying to take
it from you...

Yeah, that would be cool. So, are there any factions that I threw out that we can rule out?

I guess it might be possible to group some together.. like pirates,
highwaymen and terrorists could be "Outlaws" or something similar.

I like the enslaving one. What about one that sorta resembles Native
Americans (not going to be called that though. Maybe the people of the
Hawk). |

Hmm, that could work, the undecided beast race could have an American Indian theme.

hahah.... beats shave to be native americans....
I dunno I just wanted to point out that somehow...
elves are the perfection of society and harmonizing with nature....
men tend to be the bane of nature and struggling to survive
orcs tend to be 'hunnish' barbaric semi-troglodytic folks along with goblins
beast-folk tend to be tribal and native american/african/island ish...
I got nothing against it but seeing trends thats all

How about a bird-like race? Could have feathered heads (American Indians?), face paint.

Sure, I'm all for it. Better than having monkeys, and more fitting for
mountains. Making beaks work in face gen will be complicated though. |
