Do you have Photoshop? If so, then I can recommend doing some city and possibly even shop signs. IS is doing some of the shop signs over on this claim: CLAIM: Visual Design (Settlement & Shop Signs) (Claimed) and he's doing a pretty nice job so you really need to have access to all the options that Photoshop offers. If you contact IS he might be able to send you over a basic template that you can work on to create your own signs....and if you use the city planning thread to check which signs need to be included (for shops) then you'll know what still needs to be done....
I'd recommend getting hold of a really good wood texture and using the standard sign mesh. There is likely to be a good wood texture in our assets. Otherwise, try these sites: http://www.filterforge.com/ (my favourite but only useful for weird textures), http://www.cgtextures.com/ , http://mayang.com/textures/ and http://www.textureking.com/ . You'll also need a suitable set of fonts to choose from: http://www.1001freefonts.com/ , http://www.urbanfonts.com/ and http://www.dafont.com/ . Be careful with your selections because the list is endless and it's easy to use something just because it looks good....but it may not be appropriate in the long run. Bear in mind that signs from different regions may be differently coloured. Parchlands signs may be pale and cracked. Everglades signs may be decayed and use rotten wood. Blackwood and Jungle signs may be mossy. Check out that link above as I describe to IS how to use silhouettes effectively in creating small illustrations. This is particularly effective if you use some of the Southern American and Tribal vector shapes but be careful....many of these have been used already and there's a danger of over-using them. If you get familiar with Photoshop then you can learn how to actually make silhouettes by using the different filters. You can make silhouettes out of almost any picture. It's quite easy to use things like 'multiply' in Photoshop which blends the wood with the texture. Save your psd file often so you can go back and change it if you don't like how it goes. If you google something like 'sword silhouette' you will see that you can find almost anything in silhouette depending on what theme you want to create. For example, what summarises Stormhold: a hammer? lightning? So google 'hammer silhouette' and see what you get. It's just a case of experimenting...and don't accept something you're not happy with...
