Phantoms
Inspired by a recent conversation
Blue verdant skies of twinkling stars thither such granduer so high how can I but wonder? how can I but shiver? Seeing is knowing, I've seen what I've seen heard quiet sounds and distant howling Did I hear? Have I seen? I think that I did, or 'tis all just a dream Is all smoke and sheen Is all shadowed gleam To think is to know, but to know is to lie He cannot be known to an eye such as mine but I see the white stars, and the ivory snows I still hear how the chilling wind blows How the stream burbles and flows How the autumn bell tolls Did I see? Did I know? Did I hear the wind blow? Does the sigh in the woods mean that air did there flow? How else to know, what is and is not Our sight and eyes, please, betray us not! Help us, to see, else, we do not
Her eyes, though which crystal tears gave light,
shone like the moon in water, seen by night |
