So I imported a Morrowind mesh into Max 8...
The results were less informative than I had hoped. Here are the issues I discovered:
#1. Hidden objects like the Collision Box or Bounding Box appear to loose their names. #2. The mesh imports fully textured, but the textures are not in the Material Editor. #3. Some settings may be getting lost... Unless Bethesda had some top secret way of making their meshes for things like leaves two-sided Backface Cull probably shouldn't be checked in the mesh's properties, but upon import it is. I hope these things are addressed in the next release of the .nif importer/exporter, or if it is something that I'm doing wrong that some kind soul would come in here and tell me. I have to admit that despite these things I really appreciate all the hard work Gundalf and his team have put into this. - Deathbliss UPDATE! I just imported a tree from Oblivion into Max 8, and got a box. Each tree netted me a different colored box, and again no textures appeared in the Material Editor. |

1. True, but you can just press H to get a list of the objects in the scene, making it easy to select all the nameless collision objects. Select 'em, choose "Hide unselected". Reset Xform on each of them and set them as collision objects, then hit CTRL+A and group them, choose "unhide all", then "hide selected". All done
(If anyone is wondering how come I knew that, it's because I imported a collection of Morrowind nif's from Oom's Hlaalu Tileset) 2. Open the material editor, press the dipper icon - just to the left of the drop-down list that usually says "01- Default" - and click on any of the meshes. Now it's imported. Material editor settings can't be kept in anything other than *.max files, but the mapping and texture references is saved in nifs, meaning you can bring them into the m.e. 3. hrug:

My pet peeve: huge images in img code. I reserve the right to make any such image into a clickeable thumbnail whenever I see it. Angel mired in filth |

Woah!
So I can see the texture settings? YAH! Thanks for the reply, I can't sit still all over again - gonna have to check this out!
As for #3 that's no big deal - I mean I know about backface cull now, so I can just experiment and figure out if Morrowind tree meshes and the like really need it or not. In fact that will be fun, so I'll try that too. If it turns out to be a lost setting no big deal - throw it on te to-do list. I'll post here with whatever I learn. AH! There's the icon I need right now... Deathbliss P.S. What is it with these dancing bannanas??? |
