Texturing trees
Although this work is intended for Valenwood, the question I have is general enough I believe to be relevant over here, especially since I'd really like to add a couple of BC trees to this mod as were shown in this post before the housecleaning. Anyway:
I just started looking at doing a lighthouse based on Mormacil's design. As befits VW, it's basically a very large plant or a tree, which means trunk, root and branch modelling. The qusxtion is how do I UV map roots and branches so that they blend into the trunk? My initial Google forays basically just reveal that it's a giant pain in the @$$. Does anyone out there have more specific ideas or resources? Thanks, Steve |

Well, trees grow their bark so that the long cracks always go up the tree. When it comes to branches, no, you can't make them blend perfectly into the tree, that's just way too much work for anyone to do. But you can make the mesh of the branch blend into the trunk by making it wider where the branch meets the trunk. That will give a good illusion.
Some great models to look at are the Ndib trees modded for Morrowind. They're also converted to Oblivion somewhere around here too. Those trees are great examples, their UV looks great. Although, not sure if they have many branch examples. The branches were used as separate meshes which modders could place along the tree for further customization. The giant mushrooms in SI are good to look at for that concept shown. They look a lot alike, just without the giant mushroom caps.
Lol what?
