Vista bugs are almost entirely User Originated driver problems, ignore those claims.
I would reccomend 2 gigs though, as ultimate will consume 512 by just being alive. I swear by Vista, having run everything from DOS, to 95, 98, 2000/ME, Mac OS9, Mac OSX, and Xp, I have to say that I've been most comfortable in 95 and vista. I'll leave the buggy piece of crap jokes be. But there are many subtle differences that make XP feel too cluncky to me now, and after spending a week or so getting all the right drivers, I haven't had a single issue witha single app. I love vista.

I suggest staying at XP for atleast 6 months. I believe that by then the first Service Pack is out and all the Vista drivers are better....

Maybe so, But I have been doing research and talking to friends and experts alike and they all have Vista running with no problem. All drivers are working and with my friend some are not even Vista Specific and they work fine. All applications so far seem to be working.
Also to note, I was talking to my Operating Systems teacher and he said Vista Ultimate will run perfect with 512MB ram but you need 1GB to run the advanced options and media searches.

The fancy effects get old after a while, once you realise they add no new functionality at all and just slow everything down. The only useful thing I've seen done in a 3D window manager is expose type effects, but windows vista doesn't even do that. Transparency is also the absolute worst thing a computer UI can have (and vista has it), it's just useless eye candy that hinders usability. I don't get why Microsoft can't just make they're UI themeable and highly customisable, because Microsoft is clearly incapable of producing a decent UI by themselves.

I agree, a certain measure of 'beautification' is needed in my opinion, but fancy effects just slow the computer down...

They are all optional, and all replaceable by non-transperant version if you can use google and a little computer know-how.
I love the volume mixer. I actually LOVE UAC, people have bitched about microsoft security for years, and so microsoft gives them a very powerful user controled security system to stop annoying (you can't do that) messages, and those same people and then some bitch. Its optional as well, but I much prefer life with it. Vista hasn't been out long, and none of us code at the level to really know what vista does and doesn't add at a base level. There may be oodles of functionality left to be utilized by those with the know-how, but enough time hasn't passed. And even if that's not the case, I have taken no performance hit, I have my aero set to go off when I run a full screen application, and to return when I close it, I love my Vista.

Except if you turn aero off what exactly did you buy vista for? For the 6 years MS worked on it they seem to have accomplished very little.
UAC was a move in the right direction, especially since Unix OS's (OSX, linux etc) have had essentially the same thing in the form of sudo since 1980. Except for one slight difference - Unix was designed around the idea you wouldn't run as administrator, so sudo is elegant and easy to use. Unlike windows which is still essentially based on a single user non-networking OS where the user was never expected to run as anything but an administrator, and as a result UAC just doesn't work as well as it should, because it jars horribly with the design ethos of the OS. |
