Music/Valenwood Soundtrack Reply to this Post Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Posts Report Post to a Moderator       Go to the top of this page

Allright, as said in the recruitment topic, I might wanted to create a soundtrack for Valenwood; BUT I need a little help on this, on how it should sound. Like. Should it be really HEROIC, calm and peacefull, brutal though yet calm. ETC: all those kind of things, and as soon as we gotten to a solution I will start working on it and release a bit after bit off what I have created so we will get a nice soundtrack for our "little" project :)

so what do you think would fit the most into to the province of Valenwood ?

I think it should sound very mysterious, you're walking through this huge untamed forest, what's inside is a mystery to the outside world.

Well you should have several different types of sounds for a soundtrack... I can imagine in my head a peaceful tune (Ochestrial) for the cities and such and then a mysterious tune for the deep forrests... Then battle I just invision this barbaric drum beat somewhere coming into dogfight between instruments...

Ahhh.. If only I had the tools to make music...

Certainly I think this should NOT just have music divided into Explore and Battle categories.

It would be great to have various themes, maybe one for each town, but if nothing else there should be something different between towns and forests. I'd imagine the forest could sound all mysterious while the towns could sound homely, and of course the capital city would have its own unique patriotic theme track.

allright I tried a little out, ehm.. its not very lonig, but its just to see if this is something fitting, so I wont get started on something and then try to complete it if it doesnt fit into the valenwood "sound" so please click here to hear what I've come up with, and tell me if you think something like this would fit in, and then to where in valenwood; cities, forests, etc.

For the forest tracks I'd say generic woodwinds with percussion instruments at intervals, with backing provided by a harp or bassoon or flute. For the towns, an increase of violins and violas and other such "civilised" instruments.

Ideally tree-top towns would have an inbetween of the two types rather than sharing that of the normal towns.

It's hard for me to put sounds into words. I know what I've heard, but I'm not enough of a music expert to exactly say what instruments I've heard doing what effects. But I'm sure it'll all work out. :)

Actually, what might work is a core theme track that is recorded around five different ways with instruments subtly swapped between each--so at one end of the scale you've got all the foresty instruments and at the other all the "civilised" ones; because of the vast changes in the orchestra you might not even notice the tune at one end was the same as at the other, and yet they'd all have the same familiar "feel".

Another thing to take into account is what is already going to be done by game ambience. Take Ocarina of Time for example. Its music simulate birds chirping and wind blowing and various other effects because the game can't, whereas Oblivion can do those directly. Because of the randomness of the ambient effects it might end up a little jarring to have the music approximate a birdcall when real birdcalls are playing right alongside it!

IO just remembered that I was working on a kinda relaxing track some time ago which I never got to finish, I know that many of the tunes and other things might not fit into it and it might also be a bit to dominating BUT, I would still like you to listen to it, it might give some ideas, or maybe there is something that you think that we could use, either of the tunes or of the nodes. etc. feel free to comment ;D

Edit: Damn I forgot to put the link in, it just needs to be uploaded then I will put a link in, in about 5 min it will be there :)

Edit2: allright there we go http://s41.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=28M2RGQIT8IOB1ABX3CYXHEYOA oh yes about the size its in wave format so thats why its that big :p

No, I missed that somehow. Sounds great! It leaves me wanting more, which is a Good Thing. It sounds really mysterious and yet a little edgy too... perfect for a forest where you can find both wild animals AND secret goodies! :D

It'll probably take me the rest of the night to download the second sample (256kbit/sec is "broadband"?! Get real Xtra!) so I'll edit when I've heard it.

EDIT: ummm... okayyyy... the second one is rather anachronistic... :D Maybe if you cut the bass and drumming it might be closer to usable... the basic undercurrent tune sounds fine. I can certainly see exploring a town to this tune, once corrected. It reminds me a lot of Daggerfall's town themes.

as I said, it was a theme I worked on some time ago and never finished, never was meant to be used to this subect and that it might be to dominating, and some other stuff.. however, I worked on the other theme a bit more and if I must say it my self, I think it would fit perfectly into the forest part. Ofcourse it has to be a bit longer BUT, try and listen to this, I converted it to MP3 so its down on 700KB:p lol... but the quality should be good however so; http://s39.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2U1K1XQRQ2AY90AWCBIOQ7Z5G6 there you go...

EDIT; You might also want to try and listen to this one, think it turned out to be a bit better fitting http://s6.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3KCCSZP06NNB808I2L25Z5O7L7

Hm, yes, sounds good. I can't really favour one over the other (I like both!) but the second one is probably less obtrusive and more subtle.

I'm playing them back-to-back at the moment, and I wonder what it would sound like to actually do the whole track that way, with the two instruments sort of taking turns and bouncing off each other to play parts of the overall theme, sometimes echoing the other, sometimes playing in a different key from the previous, or whatever.

What do you think?

Hey guys. Just wanted to pop in here and post a link to a piece of music I wrote for a planned dungeon of mine. Most of the stuff I write is usually quite 'synthy', but that wouldn't really fit with Oblivion..So I added some classical elements to this. Well, see what you think..

http://www.solar-rain.co.uk/music/OblivionDungeon1-02.mp3

I agree that the forest music should have a mysterious feel, flute/whistle mixed with strings for to add the mystery perhaps. Either way, dungeon/forest/town music all should probably be fairly subtle, background music..but just enough to give an atmosphere.

I might have a little mess around with doing something on the 'lighter' side tonight..just as an experiment for now to see what I can come up with. Expect it to be quite abstract, like my dungeon music though :)

Wow, nice.

I can certainly see taht as the theme for a creepy moss-lined cave... mmm... :)

definitely a rather depressing piece, so I'd say it would only be used for the nastiest of dungeons (rather than caves in general).

Keep up the good work! Good job!

Thanks Garret, glad you liked it. Yes I guess it is a bit depressing. I tried to keep it threatening/moody but subtle..and also with a medieval edge (the harp), I think it came out rather well.

Maggon: I liked the 2nd Valenwood track (the ambient one) it fit pretty well. The one with the "techno" feel felt more like something you'd hear in a Japanese style RPG.

SolarRainUK: Very nice, would fit in a dungeon, crypt, heck...even an outdoor environment like a dangerous mountain pass. Very moody, looking forward to hearing more like that.

This is another piece I was messing around with today, it's unfinished..and only really an idea at this stage. I was really only experimenting, so it's not created for anything specific in mind. But I will probably develop it further, and tighten up the guitar, it's messy and I didn't record to a tempo.

I'm glad you like what I've done so far. I've been a little busy for a while, so little time to work on much. But there is this which I started working on tonight:

Zhenya

Finally something a little 'happier' sounding maybe? :) It may be good for town background music or something.

raggidman - Thanks a lot for your kind words, I appreciate it :) I'm glad you enjoyed the music so far. I intend to continue on Zhenya soon (hopefully), I got sidetracked recently with a different project to compose music for some video.

I've also been trying to experiment with different styles, and sounds. So unfotunately no new music to add yet.

Axen - Sorry, I removed the original mp3, as I did a bad job on the mastering (it was distorting for some people). The old link should work again now...but if not here's a new link Zhenya

Sorry about that!

Hey guys! I spoke to you FLESH recently, and just wanted to give you all an update of where I'm at.

Things have been a bit hectic, but I think I should be back on track now.

First, Oblivion3 has gone through some changes, I've really tightened this track up, it has a faster pace now and sounding like a real 'theme' piece.(sorry raggidman!)..I'll be working on this a bit more today, and hope to upload this today at some point. I hope you will like the changes, but if you do prefer the first version you could always use it as a reprise. But I'm excited to get your feedback on the changes I've done..

The Oblivion dungeon piece is finished in my opinion, so I won't make any changes to that, plus I think they length is plenty. But i'd like to do a couple more tracks in the near future..I love doing dungeon music! Tongue

Zhenya still needs to be extended..I'll try and get onto this asap.

raggidman: I read the Dance in the Fire as you asked, this was a couple of weeks ago now at least..and I did feel some inspiration from that, so I did a quick 'sketch' of music which I think may work well..but as yet, it's still very rough. Here's the link: Oblivion5

I think that's about it so far.

But would like to add - I am terrible at thinking up names for songs! So if you guys want to name these, feel free and let me know :)

Welcome back Solar!

I like the nature sounds in the backround of OB5, I could see myself exploring to that music. But I'm no real music expert so you will need to wait around a bit if you want the opinion of other members.

My opinion, is that it's pretty good, needs some touching up here and there maybe.

EDIT: Oh, almost forgot, when you finish your current work, might I suggest your next piece be something to do with battle, something hectic, like you don't know where the enemies are.

ohh sure I'll try that. Actually never attempted anything like frantic battle music before, it will be a fun experiment.

I'll listen to some of Soule's battle music again for an idea of length etc

Almost forgot to mention..The nature sounds I used in Oblivion5 are only meant to be temporary of course, it just helps for ideas. But if the track is used in game, I will provide a version without that background.

Update!

Ok, been working on changes to Oblivion3 again tonight..it's still not complete yet, I think it maybe needs to lead into something different, softer. But I quite like how it's evolved since my first version..I'm very interested to hear raggidman's thoughts Tongue

Oblivion3 Version 2

The Cello in the begining is untouched..but I've obviously made some pretty major changes after that part, it's turned into a real theme..
