RE: Music/Valenwood Soundtrack |

I think it should sound very mysterious, you're walking through this
huge untamed forest, what's inside is a mystery to the outside world. |

Well you should have several different types of sounds for a
soundtrack... I can imagine in my head a peaceful tune (Ochestrial) for
the cities and such and then a mysterious tune for the deep forrests...
Then battle I just invision this barbaric drum beat somewhere coming
into dogfight between instruments...
Ahhh.. If only I had the tools to make music...

Certainly I think this should NOT just have music divided into Explore and Battle categories.
It would be great to have various themes, maybe one for each town, but
if nothing else there should be something different between towns and
forests. I'd imagine the forest could sound all mysterious while the
towns could sound homely, and of course the capital city would have its
own unique patriotic theme track.

allright I tried a little out, ehm.. its not very lonig, but its just
to see if this is something fitting, so I wont get started on something
and then try to complete it if it doesnt fit into the valenwood "sound"
so please click here
to hear what I've come up with, and tell me if you think something like
this would fit in, and then to where in valenwood; cities, forests,
etc. |

For the forest tracks I'd say generic woodwinds with percussion
instruments at intervals, with backing provided by a harp or bassoon or
flute. For the towns, an increase of violins and violas and other such
"civilised" instruments.
Ideally tree-top towns would have an inbetween of the two types rather than sharing that of the normal towns.
It's hard for me to put sounds into words. I know what I've heard, but
I'm not enough of a music expert to exactly say what instruments I've
heard doing what effects. But I'm sure it'll all work out.
Actually, what might work is a core theme track that is recorded around
five different ways with instruments subtly swapped between each--so at
one end of the scale you've got all the foresty instruments and at the
other all the "civilised" ones; because of the vast changes in the
orchestra you might not even notice the tune at one end was the same as
at the other, and yet they'd all have the same familiar "feel".
Another thing to take into account is what is already going to be done
by game ambience. Take Ocarina of Time for example. Its music simulate
birds chirping and wind blowing and various other effects because the
game can't, whereas Oblivion can do those directly. Because of the
randomness of the ambient effects it might end up a little jarring to
have the music approximate a birdcall when real birdcalls are playing right alongside it!

Hey guys. Just wanted to pop in here and post a link to a piece of
music I wrote for a planned dungeon of mine. Most of the stuff I write
is usually quite 'synthy', but that wouldn't really fit with
Oblivion..So I added some classical elements to this. Well, see what
you think..
http://www.solar-rain.co.uk/music/OblivionDungeon1-02.mp3
I agree that the forest music should have a mysterious feel,
flute/whistle mixed with strings for to add the mystery perhaps. Either
way, dungeon/forest/town music all should probably be fairly subtle,
background music..but just enough to give an atmosphere.
I might have a little mess around with doing something on the 'lighter'
side tonight..just as an experiment for now to see what I can come up
with. Expect it to be quite abstract, like my dungeon music though

Thanks Garret, glad you liked it. Yes I guess it is a bit depressing. I
tried to keep it threatening/moody but subtle..and also with a medieval
edge (the harp), I think it came out rather well. |

Maggon:
I liked the 2nd Valenwood track (the ambient one) it fit pretty well.
The one with the "techno" feel felt more like something you'd hear in a
Japanese style RPG.
SolarRainUK: Very nice, would fit in a dungeon, crypt,
heck...even an outdoor environment like a dangerous mountain pass. Very
moody, looking forward to hearing more like that.

Well itas I wrote its a track I have been working on a long time ago

inspiration for the tunes
but I'm glad you liked my second ;D

This is another piece I was messing around with today, it's
unfinished..and only really an idea at this stage. I was really only
experimenting, so it's not created for anything specific in mind. But I
will probably develop it further, and tighten up the guitar, it's messy
and I didn't record to a tempo.

raggidman - Thanks a lot for your kind words, I appreciate it
I'm glad you enjoyed the music so far. I intend to continue on Zhenya
soon (hopefully), I got sidetracked recently with a different project
to compose music for some video.
I've also been trying to experiment with different styles, and sounds. So unfotunately no new music to add yet.
Axen - Sorry, I removed the original mp3, as I did a bad job on the
mastering (it was distorting for some people). The old link should work
again now...but if not here's a new link Zhenya
Sorry about that!

Some of it could be city music, but yeah story music. Besides the dungeon one, thats a pretty gloomy depresing one.

I think it would make a good wilderness music, just wandering around, listening to the sounds of nature, and this music...

Hey guys! I spoke to you FLESH recently, and just wanted to give you all an update of where I'm at.
Things have been a bit hectic, but I think I should be back on track now.
First, Oblivion3 has gone through some changes, I've really tightened
this track up, it has a faster pace now and sounding like a real
'theme' piece.(sorry raggidman!)..I'll be working on this a bit more
today, and hope to upload this today at some point. I hope you will
like the changes, but if you do prefer the first version you could
always use it as a reprise. But I'm excited to get your feedback on the
changes I've done..
The Oblivion dungeon piece is finished in my opinion, so I won't make
any changes to that, plus I think they length is plenty. But i'd like
to do a couple more tracks in the near future..I love doing dungeon
music!
Zhenya still needs to be extended..I'll try and get onto this asap.
raggidman: I read the Dance in the Fire as you asked, this was a couple
of weeks ago now at least..and I did feel some inspiration from that,
so I did a quick 'sketch' of music which I think may work well..but as
yet, it's still very rough. Here's the link: Oblivion5
I think that's about it so far.
But would like to add - I am terrible at thinking up names for songs!
So if you guys want to name these, feel free and let me know

Welcome back Solar!
I like the nature sounds in the backround of OB5, I could see myself
exploring to that music. But I'm no real music expert so you will need
to wait around a bit if you want the opinion of other members.
My opinion, is that it's pretty good, needs some touching up here and there maybe.
EDIT: Oh, almost forgot, when you finish your current work, might I
suggest your next piece be something to do with battle, something
hectic, like you don't know where the enemies are.
